Rny peeps. I am really freaked out by this dumping thing and have been told the only revisional surgery I can have is bypass. I'm ok with that but I really want to know realistic guidelines for avoiding dumping. I've read nothing over 10 grams of sugar or dumping will occur. Seems realistic and doable. Any words of advice or good reading materials out there on this?

Not everyone dumps. I don't. I think the % that dump is only like 30%.

yes, I was told that guideline for sugar content maximums.

RNY and bypass or gastric bypass are all the same thing. The majority of people will  never dump. As peachpie said, only about  30% do. And it is completely avoidable if you eat properly.

Instead of being freaked out by dumping, my advice would be to hope for it as another layer of protection from poor food choices returning.  Even though I am not a dumper, my sensitivity to junk food is strong now that I am in tune to how great a healthy lifestyle feels.

I'm only 6 months in but I've never dumped.  Giving up sugar is easier than you think.  Once you get your body "de-toxed" it isnt as stressful as you think its going to be.

I dump.. But I can eat food with 20gr of sugar and be fine, and the next time 5gr of sugar may make me ill. It depends on what sugar it is, if it is liquid or solid...(i.e fruits) and type of food.

I.e a few sips of sweet tea (that I was given and told it is sugar free) may make very ill...while a whole bowl of bluberries would not bother me... Or dark chocolate...

Right. I am not worried about the obvious like sweet drinks, junk foods etc.  I am more worried about the sugar content in fruit, milk sugars, etc.  I am aware this is my opportunity to detox and get rid of excess sugars and am so grateful for that!  Maybe I am overthinking and over worrying then. Thanks everyone!

I absolutely think you are overthinking it.  In the VSG vs RNY discussions, dumping is put forward as the worst thing ever..

If you do dump, and most dont, you will feel like crap, you'll regret eating whatever it was tremendously.  But you won't die!

I think any WLS is dysfunctional, it has to be or you'll put it all back on after a couple of years.

I'm 12++ years out now, I do dump, but I know how not to.  If I'm stupid enough to eat ice cream, I'll get what I deserve!

I am 2 years out, and have dumped twice, both times after eating mixed nuts for a snack.  They are very low in sugar if at all, I can eat sugary things and not feel anything.  I am now stay away from nuts. dumping is no fun, but it does give you a reality check of what not to eat sometimes.  Good luck, Having this surgery is way better than not having it!

Good luck

I am 15 years post op and thankfully, I STILL dump.   I avoid anything that has over 10 grams of sugar, but focus on not going over 7 grams.  I specifically chose the RNY because I am a sweet eater and it helps to keep me in line.  There are some things that I used to eat/drink that I no longer can.   I miss somethings, but I do like the fact that the dumping component keeps me in line.
