Question regarding horrible gas for the rest of your life....

I've got 4 days left before I join the loser's bench.  One thing I haven't seen discussed, at least that I remember, is the terrible flatulence that I've heard you will have for the rest of your life.  Do you carry a spray with you, just in case?  What have your experiences been?

Thanks!!!

I actually don't have that problem.  In fact I was much gassier/stinkier before surgery due to my horrible diet and food choices.

One thing I've learned about this surgery is to hold tight to the thought " some people do....some people dont" .  This will  be the answer to every question!  Lol

RNYers don't have horrible gas for their rest of their lives... The surgery with the worst track record for dealing with gas is the Duodenal Switch (DS)

Do I sometimes? yes, but that being said most people find it is related to what they are eating. Simple carbs = gas.

Taking Probiotics helps.

I'm really not any more gassy for the most part, but I do have my moments. I don't feel the need to carry anything with me because I'm not anywhere that gassy. I haven't killed anyone or caused anyone to permanently lose their sense of smell.

If anyone feels the need to carry a spray to cover up their farts...I think they need to re-evaluate their diet. No one should be THAT farty...ever.

I think this is one of those "half truths" about WLS in general. It tends to get exaggerated at times. I'm guilty of joking about it here and IRL, but for realsies, it's not so bad that I need to carry anything with me.

To add to the other comments- sugar alcohol makes me have gas, so I steer away.

Yessss....me too! It was only one type of sugar alcohol pre-RNY, but now...the only sugar alcohol I can have now is erithrytol.

I avoid all commercially produced "sugar free" or "no sugar added" products. Even sugar free gum does it to me now.

Yeap.  Same.  Sugar alcohol is no bueno.  Otherwise not really different than before.  If anything less because I eat healthier now.

My gas is about the same as it was before I had surgery.

Edited to add that my gas was a little worse for a few months after surgery, but now at 10 months post op it's back to normal.

My gas is better than before surgery most likely because I am eating less processed and carby foods.

Mine too! Like I have LESS gas now LESS frequently. But when I DO have gas, it is pretty rank.

It seems as I progressed out from surgery, it got better and better.

It was pretty frequent and really stinky (like melted rubber) the first year or so. Then around the beginning of year two I have hardly any.

I believe HALA said that some sugar free sweeteners can exacerbate the problem.

I still use sugar free sweeteners liberally though.  Gotta do something sometimes to "fix" those protein shakes.
