Was angry at myself, now just getting it done

Had RnY in 2008, and lost from 468 to 238. Everything went along swimmingly, until my first bad emotional breakup with a woman. The bad habits crept back in, started making the late night Taco Bell runs, and within 3 years, I was back up 90 pounds.

Took a while, with a few mis-starts, but I got my head right and decided it was time to make some life changes. Cut sugar, grains, fried foods and basically anything white from my diet. Started eating lots of fresh veggies, getting my protein in, and walking anywhere from 2 to 5 miles a day. Have dropped 35 lbs. in the first 10 weeks, and am getting it done the old fashioned way.

It took a little while for the pouch to shrink back down, but I can feel the restriction again, although I'm sure I've lost some of the benefit, and have also stretched the stoma. I've never been that structured of a person, but it's been feeling good setting and achieving short-term goals on exercise and food.

What they tell you about surgery just being a tool and not a panacea is absolutely correct, and you can get off course easily if you aren't vigilant. I feel better than I have in a long time, and am not focused on getting this last 60 or 70 lbs. off, but rather on eating for fuel and getting out in the outdoors to enjoy life for a change.

'Getting it done the old fashioned way.' That phrase irks me.

Glad that you're on the right path, whether it be 'old fashioned', new edge.... whatever.

Old fashioned meaning it's just plain hard work, at this point. The honeymoon phase for the RnY is over, and my body has adjusted, so now it's just about discipline and lifestyle change. The things that would have made RnY unnecessary, if I could have mustered the gumption.

Congratulations on the new beginning. I'm glad you stopped gaining before you gained all your weight back. I love hearing stories of people who get back on track and post. So many new people don't realize how easy it is to regain the weight down the road. Posts like yours make me stay in my range. When I get near the middle, it is time for action.

Congrats on getting back on track. I know that I will likely struggle and go up on and down on the scale a bit forever, but I am trying to keep it to a minimum. I feel that, at least for me, not giving up entirely and resetting quickly helps. Also, I know it gets dull, but I have made my life revolve around my WLS. This is a complete lifestyle change. You know how some people are all about fitness and eating clean? I do that with my food now, and I think that I'll always have to do it to stay on track. Not neccessarily exercise (though I do need to get better with it), but at least with low carb eating. This is just my life now.

Hang around! Lot's of us are active here and use OH as a way to keep ourselves motivated and accountable.

I take the dog and go walk everyday now, whether I feel like it or not. In fact, if I don't feel like it and am trying to talk myself out of it, I make myself walk further. Been averaging 3+ lbs a week, and didn't think that was possible this far out from WLS, but I'm finally learning what discipline can do. It's a foreign concept for me.

Life can derail the best of us! Kudos to you for saying enough is enough and getting back on track. Congratulations on the 35 pounds and you will be back to where you want to be soon. We hope to see you here often! We are all here for you

I will PM you a list of getting back to the basics that helped me with a regain recently.
