So I met with the dietician last week. She wants me to start eating like I would if I were a couple months post op so I can get used to it and be able to figure out the protein. So, I am starting today. I wanted to run by my plan for today and see if it looks ok. I have to set my IPAD alarm to remind me when to drink. This part is tricky..

7am water

8am breakfast sausage cal 190/ carb 1/ protein 11

9am coffee cal 44/ carb 3/ protein 1

11am light greek yogurt cal 80/ carb 8/ protein 12

1pm hard boiled egg cal 80/ carb 1/ protein 7

5pm grilled chicken thigh cal 240/ carb 0/ protein 24

What a great idea to start eating high protein, low carb so early! I frankly did horribly at this and had every food funeral known to man, thinking I had to eat all the crap (noodles, pizza, bread, noodles) right up until my two week liquid diet before surgery, and that just gave me more weight to lose after surgery. So I think it's awesome that you are starting to eat like a post-op in advance.

Your diet looks great to me, though I wouldn't have been able to go cold turkey from (likely) 3,000+ calories per day to 800, before surgery. So if you find yourself wanting to gnaw off your arm, add some more chicken, or a deli turkey/cheese wrap, or maybe some green veggies. Honestly though, your menu would be awesome for a six month post-op person.

Getting used to not drinking with meals and for 30 minutes afterward is key. I am almost 4 years post-op and still follow that rule religiously. It keeps the food in your stomach for longer.

You've done an important first step in deciding to have surgery and treat your body well! Good luck!

I think it's a great idea too. I will hopefully be having surgery in just about 2 months. I have already lost 40lbs since March because I had an IBS flare up and developed gastritis. This diet is hard for me because the last 3 months all I have been able to eat, literally, is toast, bananas and rice. The polar opposite of a bariatric diet. It has helped though because I have broken some very bad habits and am not interested in candy, cookies and high fat foods, getting rid of the bread though will be a real killer. I'm very scared and excited. I know this is going to be hard work and I just hope I can see it through. Coming here helps because I can see that people have done it and maintained for long periods of time and it helps feed my own hopes for myself.

Many of us add protein shake to our coffee in place of creamer.

I was at 650 cals per day on my 2-week pre-op diet, which consisted of 4 protein shakes a day and lots of water. I'm glad I did it that way. I had already had my share of food funerals and then some, so I was ready to turn the page. I lost 18 pounds in that 2 weeks, which made me happy too! Of course it was challenging, but again, I was ready.

Sorry if this is a silly question... but what happens if the pre-op weight loss from the special diet puts a person below the BMI cutoff for insurance approval? Do you (or anyone here) know whether insurers generally look at the BMI in the beginning, before the typical 4-6 mo dieting/nutrition program for deciding whether to cover the WLS?

I don't know. I had a long history of recorded weight loss attempts and so was only required to do 2 weeks of pre-op diet. Plus my BMI was high enough to be in no danger of getting too low for insurance approval. Blue Shield took one look at my stats and said yes. I'm so grateful!

ah, I see. Thanks for sharing your experience. Fingers crossed that I don't run into insurance obstacles either!
