Road trip strategies

we are going on vacation in couple of week. This will involve several hours of driving. This is a place I have a history of snacking. Any tips for me? I do most of the driving because I get car sick otherwise, so distracting myself with other amusements isn't much of an option.

Jerky and nuts are my road-trip go-tos. Chewing gum too. I've found that gas station convenience stores make me snacky and want to buy junk, so send someone else in to pay for gas or get their own snacks. Keeping a drink handy is good too. I usually do coffee and I look for things like Propel, Diet Snapple and Bai drinks in the coolers.

I've also found that the larger truck stops like Pilot and such are offering some healthier options like cheese sticks and boiled eggs. Just walk past the Cinnabon!

I'm a control freak, so on road trips I like to do most of the driving and I've found trivia to be a nice way to make the time go by. Game stores or even Target should have a good assortment of TV, movie and music trivia cards. I ran through the entire Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit stack rolling through Oregon.

Have a good time! I love road trips!

Yeah this is a huge one for me. I stick to my normal ish eating times, so that helps. I often pull aNYMom and have sliced meat in a ziplock. Sliced steak or marinaded chicken breast etc. Big rest areas have great options like devilled or boiled eggs (also something I pack on occasion) veggies and hummus (not lowest carb, but still good )

smaller rest areas I'll get cashews or sunflower seeds. Or jerky sometimes. Decaf coffee, hot or iced. Flavoured water.

Fast food I avoid as much as possible, but in a pinch I've had chili or a burger with no bun.

Jen, those ideas sound like fun! I've enjoyed listening to books (like those available on Audible) during very long drives, too.

This may seem extreme, but I plan out my road trips by hours and schedule when I can eat and drink. Otherwise I can find myself grazing the whole time. I also make sure to bring extra non-perishable WLS friendly snacks or a good cooler. I don't want to find myself without a good option, and if I absolutely must have something extra I want to make sure I'm not diving into fast food or convenience store snacks. DH is great about doing picnics along the way, so often I pack enough for both of us and we skip restaurants.

Hi

We do a road trip every second weekend for my sons football teams.

I pack lots of water, Costco Premiere Protein Shakes, Rio Tuna with diced veggies, cheese, almonds, veggies N Humous, dry chick peas, sun flower seeds, fruit, gum...

We are on the Canadian side, so if we do stop at th Enroute food stops. The only food that I buy is Tim Horton's Chili.

Hope this helps!

Enjoy

I drove the whole way to Florida and back this spring. I had healthy snacks readily at hand (cheese sticks and almonds), prepacked lunch in the cooler (tuna salad and cottage cheese), and lots of water bottles. I tried to eat on my normal meal schedule as much as possible. I also had snacks and lunch for my passenger (DH) so we wouldn't have to stop other than bathroom trips (where we ran in and out). We generally ate our lunch in the car or at a rest stop during one of the bathroom breaks. We did go out to eat for dinner each night but I just ate protein forward like I usually do when out to eat. I lost about a pound each direction!

I drive up to 5 hours a day for my terrible commute, so I am a PRO on car snacks and always have emergency snacks in the middle console!

Trader Joe's has everything you need: Chomps Meat Sticks are 100 calories, don't need refrigeration, and very filling. Oven Baked Cheese Bites are good if you need a crunchy chip-like snack. A whole bag is over 300 calories, but all protein. And last, Babybel Cheese because the wax cheeses can be out from refrigeration longer than other cheeses.

Have a great trip!
