Weight loss

Hi all,

I has RNY July 24th, the recovery has gone good, one thing I have noticed, my weight hasn't been dropping. I have lost 5lbs since returning from the hospital (7/26). Is this normal? seems like most people post op are losing a decent amount of weight every week.

I have been struggling with eating, I've been sticking to things I know wont make me sick, and my calorie intake has been in the 300-400total for the day. I was thinking maybe need to force myself to eat more to help metabolism work harder. Another thought I had, was the body is just burning fat and I am not seeing big results.

Just curious if i'm being impatient, or if this is just normal, my little rant.

First, congrats on your surgery. If you read through past posts, people definitely lose at different rates. Also some of us actually gained weight while in the hospital for surgery. All of the IV fluids and swelling added 8 pounds for me.

Also another common phenomenon is the 3-week stall. It is very common for people, me included, to stop losing weight about week 3 for a week or so. You are right in line for that too.

All of that is to say that if you are doing the right things, lots of fluids and protein, you will lose over the long run.

Thank you reassuring me. I'm trying my hardest to keep hi protein and lots of liquids (yogurt is my friend)

It sounds like you're doing very well. I'd just make sure you're hitting your protein goals so your body can heal. I know that at your stage I was really struggling to get in my fluids which also is critical for weight loss and healing.

300-400 calories sounds about right.

Good luck!

You're right on time for the infamous three week stall. This happens to pretty much everyone. Please don't eat more. You don't need to "trick" your metabolism. The only way you can make it work harder is by exercising--eating more is NEVER the answer.

Do yourself a favor and search for three week stall in the search field. You will see many many many posts about it and know that you are not alone. Stay your course and you'll be fine. :D

I also had my RNY on 07-26-2017 and having the same problem. I gain about 7 pounds from all of the fluids I was given in the hospital. Since I have been home I have stuck to what I can have like glue. Making sure I to get all of my protein in. I was on liquid diet until today so nothing had changed for me since before the surgery. Before surgery I was put on an all liquid diet for 7 days and lost a total of 15 pounds that week. So I thought my weight would keep dropping like that, but I am only down 10 since surgery and if you take away the 7 pounds gained from fluids I only lost 3.

Good luck we will get this down and our numbers will start dropping.

It might be easier for you to stop weighing yourself for now. Just stick to plan, then step on the scale in a few weeks. Waiting to weigh at this point may help you to avoid frustration. You will definitely lose as long as you are sticking to your plan!

Thank you all for the encouragement.
