So surgery was monday.. slept most of that day, had a TON of pain mon/tues. Come tues they finally let me drink a little bit, jus****er and broth. Come wed. I was to drink 1 oz of water every 15 min. and have 4oz of water every hour. Apparently I didn't do well enough and they made me stay another day. I find that I have a hard time drinking anything bigger than 1/2 an oz even if it is water. And then I have to wait 5 min to drink the other half oz. I am also allowed to drink full liquids and even have jello (i found jello and I don't get along well at all, and neither do I do well with beef broth) I still hurt in my stomach area but no where near as bad as I did.

Also I already started having BM's (tmi sorry) I look forward to when hiccuping doesn't cause me so much pain. At this moment, hiccuping hurts more than throwing up (tmi again sorry) Drinking my pain med causes painfull spasms for me that I hope go away. But for now I'm in that phase of what did I do to myself and will this get better!! Really hope so!

Of course it will get better. This is sort of "Hell Week".

Most folks are off the pain meds by now unless you had an open surgery. Right now hydration is your job. It's critical. I can clearly recall feeling the restriction on just a single big gulp of water. Try a hot beverage but no caffeine. Decaf coffee/tea really helped me get liquids in.

I cant recommend enough the ready made Premier Protein shakes.

Congrats on your surgery. The first week is hard with gas and getting fluids. Try to do some walking to work off the gas. Also I found that room temperature liquids were hard for me to digest so I did alot of hot herbal tea and SF popsicles. This time will pass and things will get better, but in the meantime, sip and walk!

What Librarian said! But also try to take smaller sips and let them trickle down so it's not as abrupt. I know it's difficult cause you feel like that's all you're doing but it will help. Also, I would watch tv and just walk circles around my house every commercial break. It really helps with the gas pain. Everyone's pain is different but it usually is related to the amount of gass you have.

I understand how you feel about the hiccups they will get better and not be as painful. Sorry you are having such a hard time getting your fluids in. I can only drink half an oz also. I was drinking more than that and was having a huge problem with nausea and the doctor suggested I slow down. I am able to drink half an oz every 5 minutes or so and not get sick anymore. Things will get better I'm just two weeks out and have started on soft foods. There's not a lot that I want to get, but it is helping with the nausea.

Congrats on having your surgery and being home now, Miranda.

I totally remember how awful I felt that first week; hang in, it does get better.

A lot of people found warm liquids were easier to tolerate but for me, ice cold was best. I later found I had lots of inflammation so that is why the cold liquids were so soothing. I drank premier protein shakes and kept the shake I was working on sitting in a bowl of ice to keep it cold. I poured it into those little medicine cups for awhile, then upgraded to a cute espresso mug, which held the same amount but had a handle and was heavier and less easy for me to keep knocking over, lol.

I think that the key to my success was walking walking walking - I'm not talking about speed walking, I'm talking about every hour getting up and setting the stove timer for 15 minutes, then shuffling around the living room until the buzzer goes off. While I'm up I refill my water and maybe take a shot of protein shake.

Walk, sip, walk, sip cause that's your only job right now ;)

Can't wait to start feeling a little more normal. I will say that, I look forward to when taking a bite doesn't cause me hesitation of.. will this hurt, is this bite too big, should I focus on water more or should I drink protein shakes more. I did take a chewable vitamin today. Was told flintstones complete was a good one to take, and I should slowly work my way up to to vit b12, and vitamelts are good to take to.

I'm still on liquid hydrocodone,. But i find I'm only taking it 1 or 2 times a day atm. And not unless I'm in a lot of pain.

I think I need to drink my protein shake though because right now I've only been focusing on water, a little pudding, a little yogurt and that was it. I feel like I need to get some protein in me before my body starts to think it's in bad shape. Not sure.
