Why low fat?

Hello -

I may need to go to my nutritionist about this but I am curious. I'm only a little over one week post-op, just started full liquid diet on Tuesday. I sent an email to my clinic to check if a couple items would be considered full liquid.

In her response she listed items that are acceptable. One of them is creamed soups - low fat.

Why low fat? Is that a throw back to fat is bad or does anyone know if there is a legitmate health/healing reason to have low fat at this stage of the game?

Insights, thoughts, knowledgable replys appreciated!

Thank you!

it was my understanding that in the first few weeks post-op it is just easier on digestion to have lower fat items so that is what they recommend during the liquids and soft foods stages.
My NUT said that it is OK to switch to full fat later on as long as you are keeping to a strict low carb diet.

I am sure all programs have different recommendations but that is how it was explained to me.

In general especially during the losing phase I don't think most of us worry about the fat. It's max the protein, limit the carbs and fat kinda falls where it may.

Newly post-op my only thought is that the higher fat might be too rich and just not be agreeable to your pouch.

Some Bariatric practices do promote low fat I guess for calorie reasons, but don't worry at this stage you are not getting too many.

I agree with NYMom. Early post-op high fat foods, particularly fried foods and rich dairy can cause nausea and diarrhea because the new stomach has trouble digesting them. After that fat isn't really a bad thing and can help the skin when you aren't eating other fats.

Oh goodness, nothing like fried foods. I'm talking specifically about creamed soups that are strained, about 5g of fat in a serving.

But I do get your point. I've been feeling pretty good, don't want to mess with that. I have sent a follow up message to the nutritionist just to see what the exact reasoning is behind the protcol.

Thank you!

I wouldn't have been able to digest it but I see strained cream soups on some newbies' menus from their nutritionists.

On my list it was cream soups made with skim or 1% milk, i.e., Tomato, broccoli cheese, cauliflower. You're eating so little at this stage it probably doesn't matter.

Hi,

I am nine months out and still cannot handle high fat foods. I limit that even eating meats with lower fat content. But everyone different.

Agree that early on high fat foods do not feel great going down. After a few months though I had to start adding fat into my diet because my skin got so dry. Also, in the beginning you need to limit your calories, but get your protein as high as you can.

I believe many of the bariatric programs/nutriionists' low fat recommendation are based on the old "fat is bad" mindset, which has been shown to not be a good weight loss approach. Most foods (including store bought soups) that are labeled skim or low fat have extra sugar and/or salt in them. I did not worry about the fat content of my dairy right after surgery or since then. But if you feel nauseous with full fat, try lower fat; however, the issue could be due to lactose intolerance or GERD, which some post-ops experience. So figure out what the real issue is so you can address appropriately, meaning don't just assume it is because of the fat level.
