Noticed that the calcium in the patches is from calcium carbonate, not citrate.

It's not going through your pouch. They recommend citrate because it's better absorbed in our pouch/intestines.

Also noticed that one patch has 1000 mg of calcium. Do you use more than one patch or supplement with oral calcium?

No I just use the one patch. Again we need higher doses because of absorption issues. So I had my increased on 1000. I don't take anything else.

Have you had your parathyroid hormone levels checked? I know my surgeon/endocrinologist were concerned with my levels and they indicated that my body was leeching calcium from my bones. They sent me for a bone density scan and it came back that I have early stages of osteopenia which was a concern given my age and activity level. Also concerning to them was the fact that there's no history of osteoporosis in my family. Anyway I'm still on 1500 mg of calcium a day but they're watching my levels closely and will do a repeat density scan later this year.

I haven't but will ask my PCP about it. I called my bariatric surgeon and he just said to take my vitamins...no help!

My DEXA scans showed I was losing bone density as well, even though I was religiously taking 2,000 per day of calcium citrate.

I did better with the calcium patches, but not everyone does. As others said, weight training is the best thing you can do. They need to be heavy weights -- if you can do more than 8 or 10 repetitions at a given weight, it's not heavy enough.

As Stacy said, everyone should be getting their PTH tested. This is a test that lower in range is better than higher. Higher indicates you are leeching calcium from your bones. The calcium blood test tells us nothing about bone health.
