I would check with your doctor. Mine gave me a prescription for ferrous glucanate which was horrible it caused awful constipation. I switched to ferrous fumarate and have not had any problems but there are many other people on here that can give you more information. Also I just had my first post-op labs done and I'm not sure where I stand.

Whatever type you get, the ASMBS recommends you take 40 - 60g of elemental iron daily. The measurements may vary based on the type of iron, but if you check the Nutrition Info on the back, it should list an equivalent of elemental iron.

"Gentle iron" like iron carbonyl or chelated iron tend to be a bit easier on your stomach; large doses of iron can often cause constipation.

I take Proferrin ES from Colorado Biolabs. It can be purchased from their website, Amazon, or some pharmacies carry it. It is heme iron, which is more easily absorbed than iron salts (e.g. ferrous sulfate). It also causes less gastrointestinal issues and can be taken with or without food. Note that it is more expensive, but I figure if I absorb more and have fewer/no side effects than it is money well spent.

This is the iron I use and it has been working great, I buy mine in CVS but it looks to be at other pharmacies and Amazon... not badly priced compared to others and the type Iron we need.

i switched to this from ferrous sulfate after reading on OH that Carbonyl Iron was better absorbed and my Ferritin raised significantly. Ranging from 7 and 14 up to 60. Hopefully gone higher again when I do my labs again in January.
