So it finally happened...OH struggles

I posted before about my struggles with low blood pressure after surgery and learned about orthostatic hypotension being common after wls. I had been doing well and it had mostly disappeared but mildly came back within the last few weeks. Nothing like the all day, every day previous issue...just occasionally once or twice a day every couple of days. Then one of my big worries happened yesterday, I stood up from the couch, made it five feet and passed out, smashing my face on a chair on the way down. I do not recall feeling dizzy or lightheaded, I usually brace myself if I do but it happened so quickly that bam I just passed out. Sporting lovely bruising along my cheek, a swollen nose and a slightly black eye today, along with the random bruising on my knees and cuts on my nose. X-rays at urgent care showed nothing broken thankfully. Trying to be more cautious with standing slowly etc today but am shocked at how bad/quick that was. I have been doing well with water etc so not sure why it's back now but I do have my six month check up in a few weeks and will touch base with the bariatric clinic then about it. In the mean time...any thoughts on why it would return after a few months?

Oh no, I am so sorry that happened!! My OH is worse when I'm even slightly dehydrated, a few weeks ago they upped my required fluid to 100/day to try to offset it. Maybe that could help? You might want to give yours a call and advise what happened, they may not want you to wait until your scheduled appt. I hope this gets better for you soon!

Thank you...I appreciate the thoughts! I'm currently getting 96 oz a day and thought that was enough but I'm getting lots of suggestions to increase fluids so you're likely right! I did call my pcp but should call the clinic too, will check in with them tomorrow.

I'm really sorry that happened. I passed out a couple of times that first year, but never was injured.

It's been really hot around here, and I find I need to drink a lot more. The least I ever get is 140 ounces per day, and it's usually over 200. Burning fat requires extra water on top of normal needs.

Are you off BP meds?

Drink more, and get more electrolytes. Be safe.

Thanks Grim...glad you didn't experience injuries, it's not a pleasant thing!

I never had blood pressure meds so that is not a factor. Apparently my liquid intake isn't near where it should be - I have been doing 3 litres a day but that's not even close to your minimum...at least another 40 ounces lol. Daisy suggested increasing my water intake the other day too, not related to this, and I am surprised at how much fluids you vets are able to take in daily! I will have to push myself more in this area for sure. You're right about the heat I guess, had forgotten a comment the doctor made when my OH first came up, he off handedly said it's a good thing it's not summer to make it worse. I recalled that when I read your reply! I did drink a Powerade zero yesterday and will keep that up too. Thanks for the advice.

I'll chime in too with the more fluids suggestion. I usually get about a gallon of liquids a day, which sounds like so much, but it really helps. With the hot weather, I find that sometimes I drink more than that. It is really hard to get in that much at first, but keep working at it.

Take great care and I'm so sorry that it has come back.

Oh no! So sorry that happened. I hope that increasing your fluid helps. One thing that was given to me as a suggestion (I can't remember if I already mentioned it to you already) was to "bicycle" my legs (basically pump your legs as if you were riding a bike) before coming to a standing position. I guess it can help with getting the blood flowing.

Actually I recall you did mention this before...I was using it when I was quite dizzy before but had stopped when things cleared up. Back to it!

I've not had your problem, but I know exactly what you are experiencing. My husband who has not had WLS is having that issue. His is 24/7. His BP is extremely high while sitting but when he stands it drops about 50 points. He's seeing a cardiologist but so far no remedy.

Sorry I don't any useful advice.
