how do you make your Overnight oats?

I am 10 months post-op and I have been adding some more healthy carbs/grains to my diet recently. I am still not at my goal weight yet, but this has actually seemed to boost my weight loss a bit lately and help with some of my irregular bathroom issues, so I am going with it...I had a few packets of the "low sugar" instant oatmeal which is not the greatest choice but I really love oatmeal and I want to try overnight oats.

I have seen a bunch of different ways to make it, with Milk, Almond milk, yogur****er...some people add Chia seeds?--not sure what this does- does it add protein?
some people add protein powder...

I know I can pretty much flavor it with whatever I like...but basically I am interested in what your basic recipe is--what sort of liquid do you use? do you add extra protein? what does it do for the consistency?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hi Amber,

My basic recipe is super easy. 1/4 C oats, 1/4 C plain Greek yogurt and 1/4 C milk. I drizzle a bit of honey on top for sweetness before I eat it. That's it! I never liked oatmeal before but now I love it!

thanks! I am curious what does the yogurt do for it? make it creamier? or just adds extra protein?
I think I'll probably add some sweetener and maybe some berries/cinnamon too...
have you heard of adding chia seeds? I don't think I have actually had anything with chia seeds in it but I know they are supposedly a kind of thickening agent...not sure if I would like the texture though.

Yes! I do use them but in my last round of making my oats I forgot to put them in. I usually put a teaspoon in the Mason jar as well and shake it all up. I have used fruit as well, although now I just like to keep it super simple

I do actually heat my oats in the morning not eat them cold. I find soaking them though somehow helps.

1/3c oats, 1 tbsp flaxseed meal, ½ scoop protein powder. Handful blueberries. Cinnamon 'sugar' on top after heated. I am much further out than you do I am sure 1/4c is fine.

Cashew milk is always my nondairy milk of choice but I recently started using lukewarm water when I mix it in the mason jar. I shake the jar a few times before it goes in the fridge and I find the protein dissolves better and reheats better in water without getting clumpy.

I reheat in a bowl in microwave and stir frequently to keep protein good. Currently using Ghost brand Cereal Milk whey protein

I am coming off about a week of bad oatmeal eating. Those instant low sugar packs are a nice gruel you can eat every meal.

I think oatmeal is soothing weight gaining food. I'm 10 years out tomorrow. Most of those years were oatmeal free years.

The "best" way is to make it a protein delivery device and steel cut for the fiber.

I'm glad I'm over my recent illness. Low energy this time led to the oatmeal bowl.

My plea would be to hold off as long as you can.

Thank you for this, I'm going to wait a bit to make some steel cut instant pot oatmeal! Glad you are feeling better!

i think this is a good point. I am not planning on eating oatmeal daily, but it does satisfy some part of my brain for that grains craving.
I think I will limit myself to max once a week of eating oatmeal and see how it goes.
If it stalls me at all I will just cut it out.
