Need reassurance - post-op diet?!

I am very aware that my anxiety is probably normal, and I'm trying to keep it in check. Surgery in 6 days.

I was just reading the posts about what rny post-op people are eating each day, and it has kind of freaked me out. No offense to anyone at all, but I'm thrown by how much attention to food and diet there still is every day. And by how little people are eating.

I had a lapband for 10 years, so I'm not new to this whole thing. I did well with the band until it had to be removed 4 years ago. I ate smaller portions but wasn't focused on ounces and carb and calorie counts, etc.

Will I ever be able to have a portion of a burger again? Thai food (my favorite)? Pizza? Don't get me wrong. I don't need the rice or noodles or large portions of anything. I'm just getting scared that I'm about to forever lose the pleasure of eating the foods I enjoy.

I imagine this fear must be pretty common at this point in the process. I sure could use your perspectives and advice.

You CAN eat whatever you like.

However, your long term success will depend on you forming new habits.

I can only maintain my normal weight by eating a low carb diet. I can occasionally eat a burger or thai food or pizza, but if they're a regular part of my diet, I'll be 300lbs in no time.

It's all a choice

Good luck with your surgery, asking questions is a good thing!

Thank you. Eating these things occasionally is very acceptable. NEVER would be really hard, I think. I appreciate your kind response.

As Kim said, we can eat anything we want. I could sit down and eat my favorite meal, salad with 1000 island dressing, lasagna, Italian bread and butter, chocolate cake with fudge frosting and a bottle of Coca Cola.

For years after surgery, I would not have been able to do that, but I could now.

So I have to accept that I can either eat what I want or be on a diet almost all of the time. If I ate what I wanted, I would gain back all of my lost weight.

The advantage to dieting after having had weight loss surgery for me, is that now the dieting and attention to what I eat really works.

My brother and I both had WLS and we both had the same fear as you. "Never being able to have a huge meal ever again"..All I can say is i pay attention to my stomach being full because As a child I didn't..and that's why I grew up to be an obese adult. I feel it's freeing to actually be able to stop eating food when feeling full now...Because my whole life I pushed through the pain and kept on eating...and eventually I got to a point where I never felt full except those rare occasions on holidays like thanksgiving.

Something might deter you from eating the old foods you used too though..Dumping syndrome* My brother and I both had the VSG so we don't have the issues with dumping syndrome if we eat carbs/sugar like you will have. I have heard people say dumping syndrome is one of the worse things to experience ever..and others that say they still eat carbs/sugar and just deal with it. It could be a deterrence for you to not want to eat the carbs but only time will tell. My brother still chooses to eat carbs and I choose to stay on top of them because I am a diabetic. His weight loss is much slower than mine.

Well truthfully I don't know because I told myself 6 months before the surgery "that if i did nothing else I was going to finally get my diabetes in check through diet" after 7 years of failing to do it. I now have a A1c of 5.1 and I don't eat the carbs like I once did..So I am just assuming it's because of my diet and not the surgery.

That's an amazing A1c!! Congratulations. Are you still on medications for diabetes?

I am still on metformin but that is it. At one time i was on 4 medications for it and my glucose was still in the high 200s.
