I take 81 mg aspirin for heart stents. A bariatric doctor put me on Protonix. The kidney doctor said Protonix is hard on the kidneys. He recommends ranitidine.
Question: Anyone taking Zantac daily?

Hello
Been awhile since I've visited this board.
I am having intermittent chest pains. I have an appt scheduled with the doctor.
I may need an coronary angiogram. My kidneys are GFR 47.
Question : Will they do an angiogram with GFR of 47. I understand the concern is damage from the dye.
Thank you

I have a burning type pain and some upset stomach feeling.
I would go to the ER but they probably don't know much about RNY.
I'll see if I can get into my barbaric doctor tomorrow.
Question: what is good to settle my gastro distress down?
PS: I am 5 years out RNY

I have had 2 heart attacks, 4 stents and A-fib. I take Xarelto and 81mg aspirin. Thus my bariatric doctor has me on Carafate and Protonix for life. Here's the question and answer to my bariatric doctor.
My Question to Dr Kim - My VA doctor has prescribed diclofenac topical Gel 1% for my left knee arthritis pain. Tylenol does not help the pain. Question: I am 4 years out RNY bypass. Is diclofenac gel 1% ok for me?
The Answer I rec'd - Yes it is but used very sparingly. If you slather it on, you can absorb too much & it is an NSAID. I would love it if you used it 2 x a day instead of 4 x a day which is how it is usually ordered.
The doctors tell me there is no antidote for Xarelto. If I get a bleeding ulcer they can not stop the bleeding.
Knee hurts bad. I hope to get it fixed sooner rather than later.
Wish me luck.

Initially my sister in law was POed. Apparently the new scheduling clerk have her a surgery date before medical staff cleared her.
She is going to meet with her psych doctor. She hopes to learn what the "show stopper" was/is.
I am hopeful they will create an action plan so she can go forward with the needed RNY.
Thank you all for your help and support.

My fav 52 year old sister in law wants to have RNY. She has several health issues. She is going thru the same Dr and program that I went to 3+ years ago.
She has cleared thru all the steps except one...the psych eval. After reading her psych eval the scheduling clerk told her "we want you see the psychologist on an ongoing basis". The scheduling clerk would not go into detail. Her scheduled surgery was cancelled.
I told her they must have seen some psych issues that might get in the way of her sticking with the program post op. thus gaining her weight back.
Question - should she make an appointment to discuss with the medical staff why the holdup? She is willing to see her shrink in the future.

I am 26 months out. Eggs give me a hard time. I do not know why. They feel like they do not want to go down....like they get stuck.

I have trouble with eggs also. Don't know why.
In the morning a drink of ice water takes a long time to go down. My NUT said maybe an abundance of mucus may be clogging my little pouch hole early in the am. Hot coffee seems to go down much faster in the am. A cold protein shake also takes a long time to go down.
I am happy. Down approx. 125lbs. Labs look good.

I am 26 months out. I had to go to the ER 3 times with pain. The first time they checked my heart carefully because I have had 2 heart attacks.
My gallbladder pain was in the middle. Came on slow at first. Got real bad and then slowly went away over a period of 2 - 3 hours.
I did not think it was gastro related because burping of sipping cold water or sipping warm tea affected the pain at all.
The 3rd time the lady doctor ordered an ultrasound. Gall stones were found. My bariatric doctor said the gall bladder needs to come out. He did the operation. No more pain. The operation was simple. I did not need any pain meds at home. My eating and bowel habits are the same as before.
I am fixed now since March 2015. Hope you are soon.

Hi Lora
Protonix reduces acid so I thought that would have an effect on digestion since acid is a digestive fluid if you will.
My stomach is no longer plumbed into my digestive tract. I have a small pouch since I had a RNY. So there is not much to coat and with the small hole out of the pouch some of the Carafate must go the the intestines. Much absorption does occur in the intestines.
I take aspirin for heart stents. I take Xarelto for a-fib. I had 2 MIs on Coumadin so I was switched to Xarelto. Dr Kim says if I get a bleeding ulcer it could be fatal. There is no antidote for Xarelto. The Carafate is preventative as is the Protonix.
Thanks for the info.
PS: I am out 2 years and down 118 lbs.

I am on Protonix and Carafate before meals and before bed. I am on them permanently.
Question: Do I have more malabsorbtion as a result of taking Protonix and Carafate?
Thank you.

I have done the "stuck steak" thing. I usually get the "foamies" before I vomit.
I have also done the dumping syndrome thing too. Mine lasts 3 hours.
I too was not sure if it was a "stuck" or a "dump" at times. Doesn't much matter, both are causes by bad eating habits.
I learned that I can eat beef steak if cut it by shaving super thin small slices then chewing it really well. At diner I am the last one eating.
Good Luck to you.

This is a great site!
I appreciate everyone's input.
I will follow the advise of AR Queen and my surgeon Dr Kim who says "pain 3x + stones + RNY = Cholecystectomy.
I will contact my PCP Monday morning to make sure he is onboard.

Hello
I am some 18 months out. During that time I have been in the ER with chest pains. The heart checks out ok. An ultrasound spotted the gallstones. My liver function numbers have jumped up. This might be from alcohol last few months. My bad. Upon leaving the ER they recommended a HIDA scan.
The pain starts slow in the center of the chest just below the breast bone. Carafate or sipping water does not affect the pain. The pain gets up to a 9 then slowly goes away over a period of 3 to 5 hours.
The bariatric surgeon says the gallbladder needs to come out a HIDA is not necessary. The PCP sides with the ER and suggests a HIDA scan. I scheduled the HIDA scan.
What will the HIDA scan tell us?
Thank you.

Good point. I saw the rny surgeon last week. He avoided my pain relief question. He talked prevention with the Carafate and protonix. Because I take Xarelto for afib he is super concerned about a bleeding ulcer. Me too. However if and when the pain hits...it is debilitating.

Hi, yes I have the labs. I have already shared them with my cardio Dr and next week with my PCP.
I wish I would have done WLS sooner...
