Possible Dehydration

I had gallbladder surgery this past Friday and I still feel like garbage. I cannot eat without almost throwing up. I talked to the physicians assistant at my surgeons and she suggested maybe dehydration. Just drink more liquids---no solid foods until it gets better. I went to get a jamba juice because it's liquid, its vitamins, and it can have protein added into easily...I drank maybe a quarter of it and felt sick. Has anyone else dealt with dehydration---any tips would be great! I was supposed to go back to work today, but still feel crappy and now I am not sure tomorrow will be an option. If I am not feeling better tomorrow then I can go see the doctor again and maybe he can do something for me...

go to the ER and ask for an IV.  They will look at you weird, but you will feel so much better after.  I had to do this last week, it wasn't due to illness, just a little depression that made it hard for me to eat and drink. You know your body, dehydration will reek havic with it. Have a good night  Bethany

I had gallbladder surgery lap about 12 years ago.  My surgeron told me at the time that I would probably feel quizzy for a couple of weeks because the gallbladder slow down the gall going in to the stomach for digestion and after it is gone the gall just drips on it own into the stomach, so until you get use to it it will make you sick.  I hope I remembered that correctly.  It will get better and soon.  Stick in there!!

Not sure which one you got, but I know the carbs and sugars in a Jamba juice would make me a little over the top pre VSG so I can't imagine it post.  I would do as much water, broth and maybe 1/2 juice 1/2 water that you can stand.

I went 4 days without anything to eat or drink and ended up getting fluids in the ER.  I could tell things were going downhill and I didn't want it to get worse.  I couldn't keep a thing down, so I had no choice but to go into the ER.  If you could get fluids in, drink Gatorade or something with sodium,  potassium, etc.  You need fluids but you also need electrolytes. I sure hope you feel better!!!

If you cant eat without throwing up, going back to liquids will 1) rehydrate you, if it was dehydration that was the problem, or 2) see if there is no change with the liquids, in which case it might be something else going on.

Go back to liquids, and get some with sodium and other electrolytes. If you start throwing up liquids, get thee to an ER for IV rehydration.

I agree, the Jamba Juice may do more harm than good because of the sugar.   Heres' my low sugar electrolyte mix (like gatorade, but without the sugar) 8oz water 2oz clear juice, I like cranberry  2 generous pinches of salt Mix well, sip until finished. Take your time. Take a sip every two minutes till finished. This is low in sugar but the salt will help with your electrolytes. As soon as you're done, make another. Keep sipping till bedtime. When you wake up, do it all over again.

Sometimes sucking on ice chips or sugar-free fruit juice popsicles is a way to ease into getting more fluids... it keeps your intake really slow, and cold, and liquidy :-)  I find it easier to do a frozen popsicle than drinking out of a cup sometimes, even a month after surgery.  I don't tolerate warm drinks very well anymore (which is a trip, since just a month ago i was a coffee and tea FIEND!). I know some people won't agree with me, but I think that if you just aren't getting ANYTHING in, being so strict on the "sugar free" aspect of the popsicles probably doesn't do you as much good as you might think.  Not to say you should be sucking down sugar like crazy (as previously stating, it can be dehydrating)... but if you aren't getting anything down, you need SOMETHING.  Just getting in a little something will boost your energy... and all the protein drinks and sugar-free stuff will be a great tool for you once you overcome this hurdle.  Really, even if you were eating "regular" fruit pops all the time for the next week... how many calories does that actually amount to?  Or maybe buying both kinds, and having both thru the day, if you think you're getting too many calories. I know that after feeling SO DRAGGY post-op I finally said "Hey!! REAL JUICE!!!" and it made an immediate difference.  Also, (as previously stated) having the popsicle's slowed down how FAST i was consuming (even though I thought I was being slow) and that helped a lot. Best of luck!!  Don't hesitate to get your booty down to the ER if you're "a quart low" and get topped off... or if you have any wonderful paramedic friends, have one of them drop by to "hook you up" so to speak (I can't tell you how many times we all sat around the morning after parties with our IV's... sad but true!).  Have you tried jello?? Same theory, just not frozen. Hugs and best wishes for feeling better!!
