Can someone tell me what it takes to qualify for the VSG procedure. Is it the same requirements as for RNY and the Lap Band? Thanks.

Ummm, I believe its the same as other WLS.  Its been used as a 1st stage for really high BMIs so they can lose some wt. then have the "switch" done to a DS.  I hope this helps

For my insurance, the requirements were a BMI or 40, or a BMI of 35 or greater with 2 co-morbid conditions. I think it is the same for all procedures at my surgeon's group. Good Luck.  Shelly

I did find a link that lists the NIH's (National Institute of Health) criteria for weight loss surgery for those in the US. The link is HERE.  I hope this helps.   Shelly

For my insurance they really consider WLS is WLS.  With the VSG being "newer" as a stand alone procedure, they say that you need to be "not desirous" of any other WLS and have a medical reason such as use of NSAIDS or previous bowel/ abdominal surgery in order to have it covered. Hope this helps,

Laura
