1 week post op - introducing new foods

I am 1 week post op today. I am supposed to do a full liquid diet the 1st two weeks. My NP told me that if things feel good  I could slowly add a few mushy soft foods in. I will I know if I am tolerating them. I have ad mashed potatoes and cottage cheese so far. I don't plan on adding anything more than that in this week. It seems that I am eating slow enough and chewing them to nothing. It seems that whenever I eat it activates a BM. Is this normal? I know it may take time to get the digestive track straightened out but what to make sure this is not a reaction to adding the two new foods.

naturally i think the solids fill the colon and it moves things along much faster than liquids. I had my sleeve 11/7 and have had 3 bm it seems one very other day. Much of my diet is water, protein shakes, cream of wheat, v-8 ,chicken soup, and cottage cheese, so i am not sure if things are different because we are not "officially" on purred/mushy. Keep us posted!

Wow adding pureed foods a week out seems too soon. I will be a week out tomorrow and will begin protein shakes then. My first week was clear liquids.
I can't start any cottage cheese or yogurt until atleast 3 weeks out. Mashed potatoes are high carbs and should never be eaten during the losing phase.
The reason to stay away from soft foods until 3 weeks out is because other foods can cause a leak if you vomit. Be very careful. You can end up in ICU.
Sorry for being so forward but I don't agree with your NP.

Although mashed potatoes are high in carbs, when you are so early out you aren't taking in enough for it to hurt you.  My doctor, dietician, and NUT encouraged the potatoes to help increase my sluggish energy.  The most I could fit was 2 table spoons.  Believe me the potatoes are a great step forward from liquids...enjoy them, cause now that I'm moving on to solids I can't have the carbs anymore.  Best of luck.

Each surgeon give their patients different orders. you must follow your surgeons orders not posters on the web-site, if your surgeon says introduce pureed then do it. My surgeon said full liquids 3 days (not clear) then pureed for one week, next two weeks mushies, then solids. I am to be on pureed now but am very hesistently introducing new foods.  Consult your surgeon.

I follow my surgeon's plan. I never follow other poster's diets.
