Bittersweet NSV

I've been putting off buying new clothing because a) I'm cheap and b) I know anything I buy now will only last me a few months as I continue to lose.

My wife convinced me to go into Old Navy to pick up a few things yesterday. It's been a long time since I could fit into anything at Old Navy as the biggest they go is 40 or 42 and pre-surgery, I'd been running 46-48... mostly 48s. I've limited my shopping to the "Big & Tall" stores for years.

I found a pair of shorts and I really liked but the largest they had were 40s and I was sure that 42s would be a tight fit. Well, she talked me into trying them on. I bascially did it to prove her wrong!  Well I went to the fitting rooms and tried on the 40s and they fit... comforatbly!

I guess I can start unsubscribing from those "Fat" store emails now!

The bittersweet part was that after I got out and told my wife they had fit, I gave the same pair of shorts to my 15 y.o. son to try on. He couldn't button them.

Unfortunately I don't have primary custody of him so I can only guide him in the limited time I have him. His mother continues in some of the poor choices that caused our relationship to end.

Good for you!!! Something I've learned with clothes is that if you grab a size "just to try", and it "fits comfortably", try the size lower, just to see. I bought a bunch of stuff when I had first dropped about 35 lbs, and I wore it for only like 2 weeks, because it really was probably a little too big to start with, and I had just been surprised that I could fit it, so I bought it without trying any further. You might be able to wear stuff a bit longer if you buy on the "fitted" side of sizing.

Kahuna,

Congratulations on your NSV.  As far as your son goes, I just wanted to say that I was a fat kid before childhood obesity was a problem, and my relationship with food was pretty well screwed up way before I was 15.  And whether or not my parents had a hand in it (besides genetics), I am not sure there would have been a lot they could have done for me.  I think I am wired badly around food.  So, I wouldn't assign too much responsibility to yourself or others.

Good job Kahuna!! You are doing so great Sleeve Brother!

As for your son... you can lead by example and continue to love him and share your knowledge. I know at 15 I was not trying to hear about my weight from my parents, I heard enough about it at school. I wish you and him all the best.
