Will vicodin hurt my tiny tummy?

Long story short, my back is hurting me terribly, so today I took 2 vicodin and a valium (to relax the muscles) which I had gotten last year (pre surgery) for my other back problems.  My back started to feel better but about 2 hours after I took it I wa**** with the WORST stomach ache.  I was doubled over on the floor like I had a bunch of gas or something.

Well I didnt connect at the time what it might be, and tonight as my back started hurting again, I took 2 more vicodin.  Then about an hour later, boom horrible tummy ache again.

Is it possible the vicodin is just too strong on my stomach lining?

It's NEVER a good idea to choose what medicines from the past for a self diagnosis. Especially with a drastically altered stomach. You're talking opiates here, SERIOUS drugs. Please don't do this again. You're not going to die, but you really need to ask your surgeon/his post-op nurse what you can and can't take. Your stomach is extremely fragile now, it simply can't process the same things a normal one can. You never know how much of something you can take, if any at all.

I'm sorry you're in pain, but it's time to leave these things in the hands of professionals that know what you can have.

you know,,,,this is an area of concern for me as well. I take vicodin and a ton of other stuff lfor pain from arthritis fibromyalgia, spine problems..etc. etc.

Am I not going to be able to take my medications afterwards?? If I don't take the meds, which I do from time to time cuz I hate taking them....I can only go so long..maybe a week and then I can't move. I for sure will not be able to exercise..AT ALL without them.

really nervous about this.......

I truly don't know the restrictions on narcotics and opiates, but I do know you are far from the first person to have those concerns, and if the majority of drugs were outlawed by this surgery, you wouldn't see nearly the amount of people who went through it. Truth is, the fatter we are, the higher likelihood we are to have other health problems. Doctors have taken this thoroughly into account. List all of your medications for every problem you have had in the last few years, take it to your surgeon and have him review it. He might be able to find alternative medicine for your problems or adjust the dosage to a level appropriate for our stomachs.

Don't worry too much about it. There is a way around most anything.

vicodin can be hard on a normal stomach if not taken with food.  I had a tooth pulled about 8 months out and was given vicodin for the pain.  I tolerated it OK, but made sure to take it about 30 minutes after food.  Talk to your doctor about what you could use as an alternative.  Ask the pharmacist  if it should be taken with food or on an empty stomach.  I couldn't take vicodin pre-op without nausea and sometimes vomiting.

I haven't taken any vicodin in pill form post op- but I can tell you that they had me drinking liquid vicodin every 4 hours for a couple of months in the early days following the discovery of my leak. It didn't hurt my stomach then, but I was in so much pain that I don't know if I would have even noticed if it did cause me any additional discomfort. My doctor told me though that for the rest of my life I should plan on taking pepto prior to taking any type of pain relief meds because it can be irritating to the stomach.
