I am allowed to eat all foods and am trying to get away from mushie foods and onto more dense food so that i can increase my protein intake.  Problem is, everytime I try chicken, it doesn't go well.  had it 4 times already and each time i have had this tight feeling in my chest, three of those times I had the excess saliva like i am going to throw up and 1 time even threw up.  only eating about 1.5 ozs, or less.    LOVED chicken prior to the sleeve but it just doesn't seem to agree with me lately.

need some ideas on dense foods that will keep me full longer.  tried meat (steak) and it went down much better than chicken but it might be too dry to eat consistently.

all ideas are appreciated!!!

Have you tried cooking it in the crock pot?  My NUT was explaining to me that things like Chicken and Beef would go easier when cooked in the crockpot cause it will soften it up.

Do you like seafood? Seafood, especially fish, is supposedly easier on our tummies than chicken or steak.

If not, I agree with the above post about the crock pot. Good luck!

Ground turkey agreed with me early out -- turkey meatballs with some sauce or some turkey sausages.  Costco carries an amazing chicken sausage with smoked cheese and artichokes.  I at them a lot early out.  Shrimp went well.  Refried beans were good.

If you're going to eat chicken, try thigh meat instead.  Chicken breast can still make me miserable if I eat too fast, chew too little, or eat a bit much.

Do you like tomatos?

One of my fave recipes:

Approx 1kg chicken pieces (can be boneless, or drumsticks, whatever you like, I use bone in thigh pieces personally)
1 can diced tomatos (you can use flavoured ones, mine has garlic & basil added)
Crushed garlic, salt and pepper to taste
Tsp dried mixed herbs.

You could also add mushrooms to this, I don't because I am allergic but my boyfriend isn't, and I've added them in the past for him and he says it's fantastic.

Drop the chicken (even if it's frozen) in the crock pot, pour over the entire can of undrained tomatos, add the seasonings (don't stir), cook on low for 8hours.  If the chicken is frozen it may take a little longer, I've cooked it for 10 hours with no problem because I usually cook from frozen.

Simple, delicious, and pre-op I'd serve it with rice or roast or mashed potatos, now I just enjoy a piece of chicken in the tomato sauce.  Best of all, it's one-pot cooking.

If you don't have a slow cooker/crock pot I can't recommend one highly enough.  It has made post-op eating so much easier for me because I make a batch of this, and end up freezing it in small batches because it reheats in the microwave beautifully.  The chicken is moist and tender and falls off the bone, and I don't have any problems compared to chicken baked in the oven.

Good luck with it!  :)
I believe it will all work out okay in the end.  If it's not okay, it's not the end.

I'll tell you what my NUT told me when I got to Solids - Slow Down!  You know how they have you introduce infants to one new food at a time?  Do that.  I like to think of the diet as us training our bodies to eat all over again.

Yousr stomach has been on liquids and soft foods for a while now.  It has been invaded, stapled, burned in two.  Its pretty pissed at you right now - still.  It also needs to be retrained on how to deal with food.  It used to have tthis big expandable pouch, it would wriggle and mix and blend food.  Now it just has this little bit of fairly rigid tissue to do what it has to do - and oh yeah a seam where there wasn't one.

The denser the protein, the more it has to work hard to do what it needs to do.  When you eat something dense like Chicken that pyloric sphincter closes up tight.  Your stomach has to mush up that stuff, get all of the air out, and soften it to the point that your intestines can work with it.

A few things to help

1.  Eat SLOWLY.  They aren't kidding when they tell you to take 30 minutes to eat your meal at a minimum.  When I eat too fast I am severly uncomfortable for about half an hour after.

2.  Chew, Chew, and CHEW.  This one is hard for me sometimes too.  But you have to cut your meat up in small amounts and chew it until its almost mush and water.  Let your teeth do the work for the missing part of your stomach.

3.  Really pay attention to that no drinking 30 minutes before or after rule.  When I was first out, it was a ntural instinct to reach for that glass of water with every other bite.  You don't want any of your stomach volume taken up with fluids while trying to get your protein in.

It will get better.  When I first started on solids, I thought I would die before getting done with a chicken breast.  Now when I go to outback and get the Joey Chicken on the Barbie platter, I can eat all of the chicken and have the snow peas and carrots with it.

I have the same problem.  Even if I chew the crud out of it.  Try dark meat and use that crockpot.
One suggeation (which still didn't help with chicken but thought was useful advice)

When you chew and are ready to swallow.......think to yourself, can you spit it out through a straw?  If you can, you are good to go.  If not, chew until you can.

Good Luck
I know I need it too.
