How did you do on low carb diet before VSG?

I have been doing low carb dieting on and off for years. I first lost 80 pounds and kept it off for 18 months. Then I gained it all back when I stopped focusing on eating low carb due to an unexpected divorce and the deaths of both of my parents, all in the same year. My weight  has been up  and down ever since, which is of course why I am planning on WLS.  When I do eat low carb, I lose weight fairly easily. (and when I go off of it, I am addict on a bender!)
I started low carb again about 6 weeks ago, and I have lost 26 pounds. Here is what I am wondering- I am now eating low carb, but with normal sized portions. Okay, sometimes maybe even portions that are too big. But it is working to lose weight for me, at least for now. Why then do I keep reading on here of people stalling or losing weight slowly on tiny portions?  If I can lose 2-3 pounds a week eating low carb now with normal portions, will it still be the same after surgery? Or will it be more?  Any thoughts or previous experiences would be appreciated. This forum is the best!

I lost 50 lbs Pre-op low carbing it, I am still low carb it works for me. People asked me "Why I had surgery if I could do it on my own." I knew I could do it but don't think I would be near where I am now.

Metabolism is tricky to explain. We can't see what people r really eating or if medical conditions contribute or if they dieted a lot in the past for example.

I did Atkins back in the 90's it is something you really have to stick with in a way post WLS, eating protein 1st is critical and you don't have room for too much after that. The sleeve controls how much you can eat and that helps w keeping the wt off. I could never stay on Atkins long enough to hit my goal.

Thanks for the reply. I guess that's the gist of it- I have never been able to stay on the low carb plan long enough to get to goal either, and the minute I get off of it I start to regain quickly. I am a carb addict without a doubt. I guess the surgery is what I need to do to get this done once and for all, and keep it off...

I AM ADDICTED,ALSO,IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD. i HAVE FOUND,WITH MY ADDICTION,i HAVE TO DO WHAT OTHERS WITH AN ADDICTION DO...TOTALLY WITHOUT. or sorry for shouting...

I can't have one or a little cause one is too many and 10,000,000 is not enough.

I have nearly 4 months of abstinance from carbs/recreational sugar under my belt. I expect to go the rest of my life this way.

I feel better being abstinant from carbs than I ever have. I hardly have any craving anymore which is wonderful,to not always be fighting that demon.

You need to realize that surgery is not   magic wand. You have to do it...head hunger and craving are a ***** and you have to get control. it is possible to eat carbs around any WLS all day long and never reach goal or lose any ssssignificant weight.

I think that's the key, too--the surgery allows you to keep it off. I saw a video a few months ago that said that your body doesn't like it when you "diet", thus making cravings all the worse.  When you do start to put the weight back on-your body will give you a few extra pounds just in case you plan on dieting again.  It's like we have a set body weight and if we try to screw with it-our body comes back fighting by giving us even more pounds. But the surgery physically (and hormonally) alters you, which gives you a fighting chance at keeping those pounds off for good.
