Were you told to lose a certain amount before surgery?

I was just wondering if anyone had been told that they needed to lose a certain amount of weight before surgery?  I was just told to try to drop some weight but I have never been sure about how much was to be expected.   My surgery is right around the corner (May 22) and I am so looking forward to it!

No. My surgeon told me that he doesn't require his patient's to lose weight before surgery. He said if it was so easy to do on our own, why would we come to him for surgery?

I was told to lose 10-15 pounds.  It really only helps your chances to lose before surgery.  It reduces the risk of complications.

Kaiser generally asks for about 10% WL prior to surgery - mostly its to see if you can start making some changes to your diet before hand.   I personally agree with the concept though implementation could be a little better - I hated Kaiser's Option program and it was a miserable 12 weeks of classes for me.

An important reason to lose some pounds (I was told 10lbs.) is to reduce the size of your liver.....your liver gets flopped around during the procedure and reducing it's size helps the surgoen get a clear shot at your stomach.

I was self-pay, and told that if I didn't bring my BMI under 50, I'd have to pay a hefty extra deposit :( Luckily, I lost enough to not have to worry about it.

I agree with Frisco. it has to do with getting your liver size down. My surgeon hoped I'd lose 6 lbs in the 2 weeks pre-op. i didn't. best, Sharon

I was told I should lose 10%...  But didn't.  In fact, I gained. Maybe 10 lbs in the 6 months before my preop 10 day liquid fast.

10% for me as well, for the diet changes and to shrink liver.I totally agree now with the decision,I think it helps with post op and detoxes you of carb cravings
