VSG better for heavier people?
RNY on 09/17/12
I've posted a couple of times on here and I have another question. Do heavier people tend to do better with the sleeve? I know I read somewhere that "lightweights" may not do as well because they don't have as much to lose. I'm 233lbs and afraid I may not lose the 100lbs I want to lose.

I am 200 lbs and my doctor said VSG was a good option for me. She did not try to talk me into RNY or any other surgery. I am also Type 2 diabetic, have sleep apnea and hypertension. I am 5 ft tall. My main concern is the diabetes and I asked if I had a good chance of remission of diabetes. The doctor said yes. My doctor said I could conservatively expect to lose down to a weight of 130 lbs in 6-9 months. My goal is to get to 120 lbs and see how I feel and look. Like I said I am only 5 ft tall. I am shooting for a goal of 120 lbs.

Is VSG better for heavier people? I think that idea might have come from the idea that it was first done on people with very high BMIs as the first stage of the DS. As a stand alone you will do very well with VSG. Do the work you need to do and you will get where you need to be. Lightweight or Heavyweight it's a tool and a very powerful tool.
I had my surgery on Dec 12, 2012 was I was 236 and now is 198. I feel I am losing very slowly. I hear that I am a lightweight. I've lost a lot of inches but not a lot of weight. Been at a stall for about 3 months but I know each of our bodies react differently. Overall, I've enjoyed the VSG and don't regret getting it. I just have to work harder physically to get to my goal!
If you go by pure stats, the opposite is more true.
That is not discounting the successes of many, many people here that have lost in excess of 150-200+lbs with the VSG.
VSG as a restriction only surgery works great IF it's the right surgery for you and your personal eating style, needs and habits. For most, especially lightweights, the VSG works fantastic if you consistently apply the nutritional guidelines and eat proper nourishing foods.. Stats wise- heavyweights, people starting with a BMI 45 or heavier- do better with the malabsorptive procedures, which the only one I'd consider living with life-long is the DS. The DS is also done on plenty of lightweights too, so don't discount that out of hand... Just depends on your particular personal and medical needs as to which is a better fit. Good luck making the call!
