Because it dehydrates you.

It does not dehydrate you.  All the new research ( not so new actually) tells us that this is not true.  Well, it does dehydrate you a tiny tiny bit, but the effect is negligible.

Yes it's because of dehydration...plenty of ppl with VSG drink coffee. You'll have to make up for it and drink more water. That's what I do. Early on I didn't drink coffee because I wasn't drinking very much.

The dehydration myth is exactly that. Caffeine is no more of a diuretic than plain water. You know what advice you'll get here if you say you're holding water? "Drink more water - it'll flush out the excess." If caffeine was truly a diuretic the best answer would be to chug coffee.

The only real concern is that coffee is slightly acidic, so start with a small serving and see how you feel. Oh - and the occasional person (my poor sis) reacts to caffeine. (She gets migraines)

I don't drink coffee (never have) but I do drink the Crystal Light energy flavors.  They don't bother me, but I'm not sure how much caffeine they have either.

I will say this much: too much caffeine gives me the jitters and makes me extremely irritable.  I have to be very careful about how much I ingest because I don't like being a shaking bear lol.

I was told because it affects the vitamin absorption in your body and the doctors want you getting full vitamin absorption after surgery

Ok, here's the deal.

People say not to have caffeine while you lose weight.  You know caffeine is a mild stimulant - that's why it's the most widely used drug.  Ok.  Caffeine antagonizes cortisol levels, which you might think is good - this increases heart rate and blood pressure.  But coritsol causes a hunger/craving response in preparation to what your body perceives is a stressful situation. Moreover, cortisol can encourage the storage of belly fat.  This effect is even worse if you happen to be partially insulin resistant, which many obese people are.

That's why good nutritionists will advise avoiding caffeine during weight loss.  Not because it makes you pee.
