Yeah, cuz being called fat for over 20 years worked so well...
The article explains it - and quite frankly all it did was make me angry. I tried to find the professor's paper. But was unsuccessful.
Basically, his theory is that by shaming fat people - it will push them to lose weight....

You know, I don't think shaming, ridiculing, belittling or looking down on anyone for any reason does anything positive for them.
If you want to **** me off, just be condescending to me, or anyone in my presence. It brings out my inner witch. I can feel the anger go right to my head. I have to keep it in check or I will cut someone!!

I can imagine there are very few obese people that haven't felt ashamed for whatever reason, myself included. How in the world would actually promoting the stigmatization of the obese help anyone? I'm so incredibly appalled. My belief is that this country needs to be much, much better educated about nutrition and exercise especially when they are young. It won't cure the problem, but it would definitely help.
I hate how he tried to relate the no smoking in public places "shaming" to obesity. You can't smoke in public places because it will directly affect the health or "comfortability" (I know that's not a word) of everyone around you. Just like how overweight and obese people have to buy a second plane seat if they are encroaching on the space of the person next to them.
I could care less if a person smokes in their own home, or in a public outdoor space where it's not directly affecting me. I would never dream of publicly shaming someone just because I saw them smoking a cigarette. BUT, people have no problems yelling things out of their car windows at me when I'm walking around campus or in town - just for fun! People are idiots! lol
