Exercise strategy?

I am wondering if after my surgery it would be an effective strategy to continue with the same activity level I have now (tennis 2-3 times a week) and then after a few months kick it up a notch to help me reach my goal weight. Would this work, or is it best to start out at a high activity level?
I'm almost 1 month out and my doc encourages walking immediately after returning home but slow and steady until I get my liquids and protein in.....I too want to jumpstart in the gym, but I have to be careful because I'm taking in far too little nutrition....I thought I could but can't really....not yet......Slow and Steady.
