I feel like a failure...

I had surgery monday and it doesn't matter how awful I feel ive had massive cravings for things like pizza, french fries, burgers, eggs.. I guess really anything that's not some sort of thick liquid. Im so bored with full liquids. But I just feel like a failure. Is this normal? I just feel like im destined to fail. Whats gonna happen when I get back to solid food? Will I end up eating everything that's bad just in smaller quantities or is it just a bigger picture of craving solid food? I mean its not all bad im craving. I do crave cottage cheese, fruit, grilled chicken, broccoli etc ...

Hi! I have not had surgery yet, but I just wanted to give you my support!! I am sure it will pass. Maybe it's kinda like a "postpartum blues" kind of thing. Do you have a support group or therapist?

I had my surgery on Monday as well.  I am also becoming a little hungry but I have realized that what I eat now has value instead of empty calories.  I am "food humble" .  Each cup of juice or broth has a value to it and I know that my body needs it.  I also am craving the junk food, but not in the way I would be if I were just on a "diet" .  I know that I have no choice.  I CANT eat the potato chips or junk food.  Its just not an option.  Set small goals each day and just get through it one day at a time.  Remember not to put too much pressure on yourself and change your perception from "I CAN DO THIS"  instead of "I MIGHT FAIL".  Small goals , one day at a time.

You ,  WE can do this!

I also had terrible, terrible head hunger at first.  After 3 days at home it was so bad that my husband cleaned out every drop of trigger type food, junk food, and all sweets.  I just struggled.  He went on the diet with me, the kids chose to go with the healthy meals, and I hung in there.  I know it is hard to wrap your head around right now, but by 6 weeks if you stay true that food will not have the same hold on you.  You will be shocked to crave things like salad, fish, etc.   Hang in there!

it's a stressful thing to have surgery and some pain that comes along with it.  its not surprising that you are thinking of food to comfort you, we all do this.   just force yourself to stay on plan, drink as much as you can, and exercise as much as you can.  The longer you manage to do this, the more natural it becomes and the easier it is.  Also filling up your time helps, dont give yourself time to think about those bad foods.

I had my vsg on 7/30/13, I noticed on my pre-op diet that the protein powder we drink as shakes or smoothies keeps me from even thinking of food...I happen to love the choc shakes and drink them all the time sometimes drinking them vs the soft food stage I am in now.  BTW, I can't drink a full shake so have to put it in the fridge for when I want it.

Don't feel like your a failure, you just started , had major surgery and really learning how to eat and the amt.....someone mentioned above that you maybe "post partum" for food...Could be, but I was thinking positive from the moment I decided to do this surg and still think I made the right decision, 100%, I don't want to look like I did for many many good years of my life, wasted in a body that society doesn't approve of (obesity) and being my outgoing self!

Think about what you will look like in the future.  Healthy, energetic, beautiful and proud of yourself.

Good Luck..

Go back to the front of this website and scroll down to the before/after photos......you WILL be inspired....I look at them myself and think I hope I can look like them.

I had surgery on the 8th, and man am I sick of this full liquid diet. The other night my parents wanted to take my boyfriend and I out to dinner - for pizza! Everything smelled so damn good!! But.. I have to remember.. I was the one that chose this for myself. For me and me alone. Just remind yourself of whatever reason it is why you're doing this -- we are still going to want to eat things, I'm sure that will never go away. But you've already made a HUGE step in the right direction by doing this surgery! Don't doubt yourself!!

I had my surgery on 07/25/2013. I had a moment my first week post op where all I wanted to do was eat a pizza! But when I stopped and thought about it, I realized that I couldn't. I am dramatic, so I have to think of things that way. So I thought that if I ate that pizza I know I could not digest it. I would vomit for sure. Then if I ate it to fast or too much then I could rip my staple line and cause severe problems from gastric fluid leaking into my body and/or a hemorrhage. Once I thought of those things, I quickly lost interest in the pizza a d just cried for about 30 minutes. Since then I see things sometimes and think.. Oh god that looks so good. I just want a taste. But I quickly turn my head and continue doing as I was. I also search PIntrest a lot for recipes for healthy versions of what I used to eat. I get to start ground meat this Friday and I am totally excited for chili and meatballs( both full of protein). Never would I have said that I am excited for a meatball... Lol. Your outlook will change from week to week as you progress in your diet. I remember being so excited to eat some refried beans.. I sat down ate two bites and I was done... Don't want them at all anymore. Good luck to you and I promise things do get better!

I'm so glad I came across this post.  I had surgery on 8/8/13 and I'm hungry.  I'm on full liquids and I'm hungry.  I thought I was some kind of freak because I had read that you're not supposed to feel hunger - aside from the cravings.  My family has not given up anything and sometimes the smell of these foods can knock me to my knees.  But I know that I just can't have them without hurting myself.  Thank you for at least letting me read that you are going through same feelings and that this too shall pass.
