Starting now

My surgery is scheduled 11/26 and I had the final preop education with the team yesterday. My surgeon doesn't require a liquid diet unless the BMI is 50 or more but the PA mentioned he talked about lowering it due to the increased difficulty from the large liver. I weighed in with a BMI of 46.3.

Last night I thought about those last meal(s)--but good grief, I've had too many of those already. I've learned, from the posts on this forum, that my success with this  whole process is up to me. I debated for a short time last night but woke up today and decided to start liquids, even though not required. I want to give my surgeon (and me) the best chance for a good outcome. I'm not waiting until tomorrow, or another Monday, or postop. I'm starting now.

Good decision.  You'll be glad you chose to lose  some weight pre-surgery.  I like your attitude.

We have the same surgery date.   Good luck with the diet, it is hard, but worth it.

Good for you!  I didn't do a "last meal" either.  What's the point, I was ready to get on to the weight loss too.  I pray your surgery is smooth and you recover quickly as I did.  :D

Congrats on the surgery date. I think you are doing the right thing. Give your surgeon the best space he can by shrinking your liver as much as you can. You want to make sure that you are in the best you can be when he does the procedure. I do not have a sx date yet because my file has only been in the insurance x 5 days. I wanted my surgery before Thanksgiving so I asked if I could begin the 2 week pre op now. My surgeon said yes. So I may be doing this a long time but I want to do it right. Also I want  to show myself that I can do this. If I cant do the 2 week pre op and do it correctly how will I do the post op? I wish you the best of luck. Hang in there its only 2 weeks.

Good for you - it's that kind of attitude that will get help you be successful in the long run!  Since you're preparing, here's a couple of other things you might want to start practicing now:

1. Walking - you'll really want to do that right after surgery to get the gas they pump into you to dissipate.  Plus it's good exercise, and will get you started on a habit that will serve you well in your life!

2. Logging your food, water, and exercise - MyFitnessPal is a good site.  Sometimes we think we're not eating that much, but when we put it in we're shocked, so it's a good reality check.  Every surgeon is different, but the usual guidelines post surgery are 600-800 calories, 60-80 grams of protein, and under 40 grams carbs.

3. Stop drinking with your meals - this is a good tip for anyone, not just bariatric patients.  Water washes food through your stomach faster; it needs to sit there for you to feel full and satisfied.

4. Protein shakes - taste a wide variety of them now, but don't stock up on them.  Lots of people find that their tastes change drastically after surgery, and a shake that tasted good before is now awful.

And of course you probably know all of these things since you're here on OH!  This forum is the bomb for support, advice, and a kick in the pants when needed.  Good luck to you - we'll be seeing you on the Loser's Bench in no time at all!

I am inspired. I too have been debating last meal. But I am trying pre op now because due to a medical condition I could not lose before now. But I want to shrink liver. I can eat later. Surprisingly I have done ok with shakes and one meal. We will see.

Wow!  I am impressed with your attitude.  Good for you!!

My date is 12/17 and I am in a battle between eating everything on the "naughty list" one more time and starting this healthy new eating lifestyle.

From all I have read on this site, it seems much of this battle is in the mind.  It sounds like you are in a good place.  I hope I can be as strong when I am just 10 days pre op.

Best of luck to you!

Jen
