I am 4 days post op, & doing horrible with my protein intake. I have to drink at least 3 protein shakes to get the amount of protein I need, & I'm usually able to get down 1 & a half, 2 if I'm lucky. anybody have any suggestions?

With you being 4 days post-op my dietician always told me to do the best I could.  Your new tummy is still healing so it can be hard to get that many shakes down.  Try everyday to get a little more down, even if it's a sip or two.

I went through the same thing with my protein and still can't tolerate the shake you would mix with milk of any kind.  It just doesn't stay down now I only drink Nectar brand the fruit juice flavors you mix with water and they stay down much better and don't taste bad.

I found that getting the premade ones at WalMart...Glucerna I think was what I bought and putting it in the fridge helped with me getting those in.

When you're able, go to GNC or The Vitamin Shoppe (or whatever you have) and get a bunch of samples in different brands. For the first few months, shakes are the best way to get your protein in. I, personally, like Syntrax's flavors (both the Matrix and Nectar lines). Also, you can always add sugar free coffee flavorings to your shakes to mix things up.

My "go-to" shake that I still use for breakfast in my 5th month consists of: soy milk (I became lactose intolerant post op), Syntrax Nectar's Vanilla Bean Torte, ice cubes made out of chai tea, and a tiny bit of International Delight Cold Stone Creamery "Sweet Cream" coffee creamer. I actually think it's delicious and sometimes drink one for "dessert" in the evenings.

Good luck, hon. I hope you can find one you can tolerate.

I had a similar issues. My doc and nut said to try my best and fluids was the most important thing that early out. As long as I wa****ting my fluid goals they said the protein would come. I would also recommend trying some different protein shakes. It was 2 months before I found one that I could tolerate. Good Luck and keep us updated on your progress!!

Hi,

I am having surgery on friday the 22nd. So I have been on the two week liver shrinking thing and testing protein shakes. I agree and hate them also.

That being said costco, walmart and safeway have MYOPLEX brand drink in a chocolate fudge flavor that is at least tolerable and the chocolate covers the taste of protein for the most part. In adition they have 42 gms of protein in one shake so that is half or more of your daily intake.

I also discovered carnation instant breakfast...sugar free...again chocolate. Mix with rice milk or almond milk or regular milk even and it is like 10 gms of protein.

Yoplait makes a blended greek yogurt in several flavors that provides 11 gms of protein per small container. It is 140 calories, however has a little sugar in it so take it easy.

I can't remember the brand but at walmart I found frozen yogurt that is amazing and fills that frozen ice cream craving.

Hope this helps.
