I am deficient in iron, potassium and phosphorous.   Ugh.   I will have to take an iron supplement and one that has both potassium and phosphorous combined.  I am scared that the iron will mess with my tummy.

Any suggestions on how to get my #'s up with more than just the supplements?  I am one of those low carbers, so adding things that have carbs is a no go.  Sticking to the program until maintenance.   I want to be able to come off after my labs in 3 months.

It totally makes sense why I feel tired and run down and have zero energy for working out.  Doc said I once my levels increase, I will defiintely feel way better.

I mean this with the kindest, gentlest tone possible- but if you are in a nutritionally challenged position it only makes sense to work on that, weight loss phase or not.  Iron can be had without carbs for sure, but if it were me I would not rule out food options.  For example, one serving of Fiber One cereal has only 60 calories, 25% of your daily needs of iron, and 14 grams of fiber.  Cream of wheat gets you 60% of your iron.  When my first labs came back I started juicing mostly green leafy veggies with a little citrus and apple mixed in- my labs were insanely improved as a result.  My point is there are a lot of different choices out there.  You will have more energy for things like exercise and life in general if you go after them.  I hope you feel better soon.

I don't know about the carb count, but when I had anemia a few years back I lived off of spinach and steak lol I have been very careful about making sure I get enough iron and potassium. I know how sick the iron supplement made me prior to my tiny tummy so I want to avoid that. I also eat lots with potassium for the same reason. Good Luck and I hope you start to feel better soon!!

I took an iron supplement early out as a preventative measure as prescribed by my doctor. It had no ill effect on my stomach. If you are concerned about stomach upset the two types of iron supplements that are gentlest on the stomach are iron carbonyl or iron gluconate.  Iron sulfate (most common) is hardest on the stomach and causes a lot of people upset. I take gluconate without any issues.

Low iron is a serious issue and you will want to get it resolved as quickly as possible. As you read above there are food methods you can use to help solve the problem, but if the doctor prescribed a supplement, I would encourage you to follow your doctor's advice in this matter. You don't want to go through the trouble and possible expense of an iron infusion.

Thanks Kairk! I started taking the iron tonight. We shall see if it has a negative affect. If it does, I will look for the carbonyl or the gluconate. I 100% will be taking the supplement for the 3 months that the doc wants me to.  I am not playing with my health! i don't just want to be thinner.. I want to be healthy!

Don't mess with anemia...go straight to vitalady and get some of her tender iron. Best stuff out there! Also eat steak, liver, deer, look up the list of foods with a high iron content. If you are low but still not in the iron infusion need zone, with vitalady and some steak you can get your levels up. Potassium...add some Lo Salt in your food. Its basically potassium. It works! Sorry, no idea abt the phosphorus. Best of luck!!!!

I am going to try the iron prescription since it was free with my stomach, and if it upsets my tummy.. I will RUN and not pass go to vitalady!  I love steak and eat it often.. maybe I need to add some more.  I will have to look up the Lo Salt! Thanks!

use a cast iron skillet to cook all meals.   Add tomato sauce or any tomato base to a dish and it leeches out more iron.   My counts were low the first blood test and now they are fine.  Chicken livers breaded with a little flour and fried in cast iron is high in iron.  I also did not want to take supplements for this.   Product 19 high protein gives you 10 grams of protein and a large percentage of your daily iron.   Best of luck.
