VET Question: Acid vs. Hunger
Hello, you lovely VSGers. I have a quick question for our Vets (or anyone further out that I am, really)... I have been experiencing some wicked hunger pangs over the last week. This is NOT head hunger. I'm not having carb cravings either. I carb detoxed several days ago, thinking that was my problem, but it's still there... I'm talking (loud) gurgling stomach that feels like a bottomless pit. I did some searching here and came across a few posts that talked about increased acid mimicking hunger. Has anyone else physically experienced this? I'm thinking that it's not actual hunger as I've been pretty burpy as well. It's about to drive me Up. The. Wall. I've started getting HANGRY!
And FYI, I am on a pretty strong PPI, Dexilant. I have an appointment with my surgeon on Monday and I will be discussing this with him, but I'm beginning to think that I should ask to try a different PPI... Also, as an FYI. I've also read that ulcers can mimic hunger, but I had an endoscopy less than 2 months ago and everything looked fine.
I've sent a couple of PMs, but now let's hear from the masses!

This goes away?? Meaning that it goes away because you're taking a PPI, or it just goes away? I REALLY hope it just goes away! This sucks.

I mean that for many people, over time, the excess acid production dies down and they are able to wean off the PPIs. I'm doing that right now but still have to pop Tums a couple times a day. However, I have a good friend who had the DS and she's been taking Protonix for years and doesn't anticipate ever getting off it.
Hmmm. I really hope I'm able to wean off eventually. One less medication would be nice.

Good call. I wasn't thinking about taking Pepcid. I'll be doing that pronto.

You know I'm not a vet by a long shot, but when it gets this bad for me, I have taken to popping a chewy Tums. It seems to settle things down a bit. When it gets REALLY bad, I take 20 mg Pepcid.

I'm definitely going to try to Pepcid today when things start getting gurgly.

I have been ravenous too!!
i mean like white knuckling it, fighting to raid the fridge, pantry whatever...
I was also thinking it may be acid....
the funny or weird thing is, I'm fine not hungry or anything until either after my first meal
or sometimes when that 1st meal holds me I get insanely hungry around 3-4 pm.
