does having diverticulitis mean you can't get sleeved

I am pre-op and would like to have the sleeve.  I have diverticulitis, does that mean I can't get the sleeve?

Let me preface this by saying I'm not a physician. However, I'm thinking diverticulitis shouldn't effect your sleeve surgery. I say this because diverticulitis affects the colon and with VSG you're only changing the stomach. If you were wanting to do something such as RNY or DS, perhaps not as these surgeries reroute intestines and change bowel composition. But since VSG does neither of that I'm assuming you'd be fine. Regardless, you need to disclose ALL of your medical info including your diverticulitis to your WLS surgeon.

Good luck! I hope it all works out!

I was told that it would not effect it , I have it asymptomatic , my pcp wanted me to have a endoscopy when I went to have my endoscope , I never had 1 and am older than 50

It was a little scary for my because my hubby had class 4 colon cancer but beat  it

they found the little pockets but told me that since they are not causing any problem to leave them alone

I had my surgery the next month

I have both, so I'm special :)

Seriously, I have a well controlled case of diverticulitis and I received my sleeve in 12/13.  I didn't and haven't had any issues really, although I'm told if it isn't under control you have a higher risk on infection and slower healing.  Also, the "no seeds" rule for the first several weeks tends to improve diverticulitis quite a bit.

I'm chiming in late here since I have not been on in a few days.  All the posters are correct: diverticuLOSIS will not get in the way of VSG.  That is what just having the pockets is called.  It is only diverticuLITIS during an acute infection, which most people never get.  Theoretically, if you did get diverticulitis near the time of your scheduled surgery, it could cause surgery to be postponed until the inflammation calmed down, but that is very, very unlikely.  (sorry to be obnoxious, but guts and butts are what I do for a living).
