It varies from surgeon to surgeon - you should ask yours what their leak rate is.

Non-compliance to diet seems to be the main culprit, but their can be other causes too.

Leaks can happen and mostly happens during surgery.

Individual surgeon complication rates are more accurate than national averages.

.5% to 5-6% tends to be the range.

The staple line is comprised of a multiple row of staple from end to end and the surgeon must make a curved shape with a staple set that is straight for a proper shaped sleeve.

Leaks can also happen from patients not compiling with post surgical eating progression plan or to aggressive of a plan.

My surgeon said it's 1%. Which are found a week or two after surgery. Immediate post op leaks are rare however leaks do develop over the first week or two and when they do his are small and heal on their own while feeding through an iv/pik for 2 or 3 weeks. Common enough to be expected and treated w/o complication. Post op care is important to make sure they are caught.
