11 Month Update :)
11 Months Post Op
Sunday was my 11 month surgiversary. I’m down almost 120 pounds and am 5 pounds from my initial “goal.” If someone had told me a year ago that I’d be wearing a size 14/medium today, I would have probably cried at the cruel joke.
Life is good. My eating officially feels routine, rather than something that I have to meticulously plan out. I now instinctively rely on protein for energy, rather than carb “quick fixes” like I would have pre op. I haven’t had any serious blood sugar issues in months, other than when I simply go too long between meals (which is rare).
I still firmly believe in moderation being the key to my continued success. I now believe in quality over quantity when it comes to satisfying a sweet tooth or anything off plan. I’d be lying if I said that I haven’t had to force myself to carb detox more often as my capacity has increased, but the scale is still moving down in an orderly fashion, so I’m going to keep on keeping on… I’ve lost 5 pounds in this last week alone after a several day detox landed me in ketosis - something that I hadn’t experienced in so long that I almost didn’t recognize!
NSV: My self-confidence is the highest it has been in years… I look people in the eye again. I don’t mind having my picture taken. And I no longer worry that I’m taking up too much space. It’s truly amazing…
HUGE NSV: DATING! I got on eHarmony a few months ago and have been talking to a funny, smart, kind (and, may I say, HOT) guy for almost a month now. We’ve been talking on the phone for hours at a time and it’s been just effortlessly awesome so far. We are meeting in person this weekend! We would have met sooner, but there’s a bit of a distance factor… It’s sooooo strange to think that a guy likes me after believing for so long that I was completely repellant due to my weight, but I’m adjusting pretty well! This guy makes it easy to adjust ;) He’s actually lost about 100 pounds himself and was great when I told him that I’d had WLS. It took him a minute to adjust (I kind of sprung it on him!), but he has since said that he is proud of me for being brave enough to tell him about it and let him in on something so personal, even though I was so nervous (seriously, that conversation was the scariest, most nerve-racking thing I have EVER done, and he could tell I was horrified). I’m beginning to think I’ve found a good one ;)
I think someone a while back started posting NSFs (Non-Scale Fails) and I’ve had a couple in the last month or so!
- Bony knees that bruise when I don’t sleep with a pillow between them.
- My bras finally became absurdly too-big. (I just got my first VS bra in probably 15 years!)
- Had to shell out some serious $$ for a new bathing suit (Although the suit itself is a serious NSV!)
I will be at my initial goal before my 1 year surgiversary… It’s so strange to think about! I’ll definitely be adjusting this goal by 10 pounds at a time until I’m where I want to me. My initial goal of 174 pounds puts me in the “normal” BMI range for my height. Beyond that, I want to see just how flat my stomach can get ;) As of right now, I don’t have any hanging skin (thank genetics and the Good Lord above!), but things are definitely starting to sag and look wrinkly. My thighs have fared extremely well, and my arms will be much better once I kick it into high gear with the weights.
Stay the course, VSGers! Whatever course you find that works for you. Newbies: Take what you read on these forums with a grain of salt. Take a little from everyone who has been successful and make your own way. No WLS journey looks identical to another. We all have to forge our own way and find what keeps the scale moving down without stopping until we get where we want to be. We can do it!!
