Scared of "head hunger"...

I am pretty sure this is a different experience for everyone, but I can say that at 5 weeks out from surgery, I haven't had great difficulty with head hunger. There have been days that I have found challenging, but as I become more adjusted to the size of the meals my body can now accommodate, I just don't get the cravings that I used to get.

My big food pleasures these days are watermelon or chocolate pudding cup with a little sugar-free whipped cream. But I don't feel compelled to eat them at all.

I am confident, however, that cravings and head hunger will return with a vengeance at some point. So I am working hard on establishing healthy eating habits now, trying to find other, more healthy ways to experience body pleasure (pilates stretching, feeling my body get stronger as I work out over time, etc.), and working closely with my analyst to tease out the issues that have made food such an important--but unhealthy--coping mechanism. In a way it's a race against time, but I'm working hard, and plan to succeed in the end.

It feels different than it did but it is there.  When I think I'm hungry for a specific food then I know it is just because they  think I'm hungry.  It is easier to distract the hunger.  A cheese stick and I'm full enough to not want anything else.  The Ole switch and bait!   Tasting it because it is there is a really hard habit to break.  But for me nothing tastes very good since surgery so a bit makes me aware it doesn't take like I'd hoped and that food is just fuel so I'd better select nutrient dense food. sometimes I'm very sad that flavors are not what I had hoped they'd be but it is a great control feature.

Head hunger is really tough for me.  Early out I was too scared / determined not to have anything bad.  I'm almost 6 months out now, and "skinny" by many people's standard, so I am pushed and tempted to have tastes.  Most junk food goes right through the stomach, so I can not rely on it for restriction.  I have had a couple of really tough times.  It is easier not to go crazy like I did before, but our minds are strong, and sugar is an addiction (for me).

While I think it is so tough, my really bad days have been 1500 - 1800 calories, where before they would have been 5000+ calories.  So it is MUCH MUCH easier to control.

I do think it is something that I will always need to work on.  Sugar is rough.
