Interesting Observation Regarding Carbs...

Hello, you lovely VSGers. I hope that this week is treating you all well so far :)

I had an interesting observation tonight that I just want to throw out there in the hopes that it helps someone else recognize their own quirky patterns.

I just got back from a short trip to visit my grandmother and attend a family reunion in Louisiana. During our trip, I did a fair bit of snacking (relatively speaking as compared to my normal routine of NO snacking) on some pretty carb-heavy foods - chocolate specifically. This pattern lasted for 4 days, from Thursday to last night (Sunday) when we got home. I’m sure that I’m probably up a bit on the scale, as my water intake absolutely SUCKED during the trip… I didn’t weigh this morning because I was rushing around, but I’m sure the scale will be disappointing tomorrow.

Today, I have found myself unconsciously revisiting my old, pre op habit of eating quickly and taking large bites. I’m not craving anything, per se, but it’s really interesting to me to notice that such a carb spike over the last few days has triggered this sort of behavior in me… This behavior has landed me with a mild case of the foamies tonight. I didn’t over eat, but the speed at which I ate my dinner has left me feeling queasy.

Tomorrow, my plan is to completely carb detox with plain, boring protein. I will try to remember to report back in 48 hours and update on how the detox went. I’m very interested to see if these habits are my version of the “carb monster” or if I’m just having an off day and the timing is a coincidence… We’ll see!

Listen don't sweat it, give yourself a pass and get right back on your bike an peddle away. You don't need to "de-carb" or "carb detox" there really is not such thing you just have to completely get back to your routine. Be grateful you are not experiencing any cravings, I would not be surprised to see a boost in your weight loss as carbing up does help that sometimes. Don't get into the habit of doing that because as weight-loss patients we are not disciplined enough to really do it reliably.

Oh, I've given myself a pass on this one. I was on vacation after all!

For me, though, this is a situation where "know thyself" comes into play. I know that I am VERY lucky to not be experiencing cravings in the form of "I'm going to crawl out of my skin if I don't eat something NOW." Those feelings are scary and all-too-familiar... I've used decarbing my entire journey so far and it has proven to be VERY useful. When my carbs start creeping up and I find myself doing the "kitchen wandering" dance, I listen to my body and recognize the cravings, then head straight into a few days of low carb to get things back under control. I know that, on this journey, I am one slip-up away from a very self-destructive binge, so it's my way of keeping those behaviors at bay... Plus, de-carbing helps me keep tabs on my restriction. Heavy protein days = better restriction...

If I'm going to make this thing work for me for life, I have to find coping mechanisms that will allow me to avoid any and all self-sabotaging behaviors. And so far, that takes the form of de-carbing occasionally :)

Since I'm 4 pounds from goal, I'm not going to fix what ain't broke ;)

When I eat too many carbs not only my appetite increases but also the capacity - seasmns I can eat more...and more.

After a few days of too many carbs - decarbing is a great idea for me.  It not only resets cravings but the volume of food I can eat.
