Question about vitamins

I remember reading about this some time ago, but I can't find it. So..... I can not take my multi vitamin.  It makes me sick to my stomach.  The only time I have thrown up since surgery is when I take them.  Should I just wait a little longer and try again or what do you suggest? I know I need them, but if they make me sick what is the use in taking them?  Oh, I am 2 weeks out from VGS.

I found that my stomach would not tolerate sweet things after surgery - I could not stomach my chewable vitamins.  My Nutritionist suggested crushing the vitamins and mixing with some Greek yogurt, and that solved it for me.  In fact I found I liked having a bit of sweet creamy yogurt every morning and evening, and I still crush my vitamins in the yogurt even now.

I'd suggest talking to your Nutritionist.  She will have some ideas.  I wouldn't wait.  You need the nutrients to heal.

best wishes,

Carol

Thanks Carol,

I am going to call my Nut tomorrow.  This vitamin is one that I got from my surgeon's office.  I took some of my own before surgery and they didn't bother me, so I may go back to those and see if the surgery made a difference.

Check with your Doc or his nurse on this.  But my Doc has his patients take the children's Flintstones multi chewable vitamins for a period of time after surgery, think it was either 2 weeks or a month out...  You are so close out from surgery & I'm sure there are lots of things your new tummy can't tolerate right now.  For a while I had to crush my huge pills up but thankfully don't have to any longer.  Be sure you eat before taking your vitamin; sounds crazy I know if you're getting sick from them but having them on an empty stomach sometimes is worse.  Take your vitamins all throughout the day not all at once if you are.  Or you could try taking it right before bed; but as I mentioned talk with your Doc about this; my response is just my personal experiences & suggestions.  Have a great day & feel better soon.

Thanks Steph,

I don't take it on an empty stomach, but the children's flintstones does sound like a good choice.  I am calling the Nut tomorrow and see what she can tell me also.

My feeling on this is that vitamins are pretty critical, especially early on, so I would suggest that you experiment with different types of multis until you find one that sits better. Definitely check in with your nutritionist; he or she might have samples available that you can try. Good luck!

My plan did not include vitamins until 4 weeks post op.  I believe this was to prevent upset stomach issues.

My plan focused more on staying hydrated the first 2 weeks, introducing protein goals after 2 weeks and then getting back on vitamins after 4 weeks.

I still use Children's chewable multi-vitamins at 3 months out.  They sit better for me.

I would call your doc or NUT and see about taking chewables for a while.
