Oatmeal?
Hello OBH family,
I just wanted get some opinions on Oatmeal...I've seen posts about ppl eating it and I've never had it before. I'm wondering if I should give a try or is the carb factor of it way too high. I have a goal of 50 g of carbs or less, but I'm afraid to try and then I crave more carbs. I love grits and they are nothing but carbs so I've stayed away from them.
Is plain oatmeal done up with like Splenda and butter spray a good choice at a month out because I'm not sure. I have my guidelines, but they don't say anything about oatmeal. I'm just two days over a month out.
Please weigh in on this...I wanna try it but not sure if it's a good choice for now or later on or if this is something I missed the boat on and can never have.
thanks,
~ B
Hi ladiieBee,
I do eat oatmeal occasionally, usually when I know I need a fiber boost. It was at least 6 months post op before I tried anything so carb-laden, though it is not that I was specifically advised against it. My sense is that early on you should be extra careful to make every meal predominantly protein.
After seeing what seemed like very expensive packets of "high protein instant oatmeal" being offered by some websites, I decided to try to make it myself. I use steel-cut oats, cook from scratch (I tried the microwave but had better results on the stove top), then once it has started to cool I add a splash of milk some cinnamon and about half a scoop of vanilla protein powder. The protein powder adds plenty of sweetness but it gets a weird texture if it is added when the oatmeal is too hot.
All the best, Katy
It was on my mushy list and I had it a few times then, but not lately. I'll probably add it back in as an occasional food once I get to maintenance - some people here add protein to it.
I remember when I was on diets in the past I would have it whenever I was craving carbs because it was better than eating cake or cookies. Just stay away from the instant mix packets that are flavored.
It's not a choice I would make, but we've all got to make our own decisions.
