why the switch from vsg to rny

I am now just 12 days pre-op and keep hearing about people who had vsg but had complications that forced them to switch to rny. Its literally my biggest nightmare. I do NOT want rny. I'm just wondering what complications would occur that make it so the surgeon needs to go back in and change it?

Some people get reflux and the surgeons that do RNY pu****  I read and post on the revision boards all the time.  This just MHO, the surgeon have a monetary reason to push another surgery.  Surgeons also don't understand ppi's and how to stop them.  I'm not saying everyone that switches doesn't need one but I do feel that there are those that have.  Also the surgeons don't do the second stage which is the DS and recommend the second surgery for those that need more than restriction.

There are just as many with the RNY that are complaining and getting RNY revisions that almost never succeed for long if at all.  Getting the RNY revised to a DS is the hardest surgery with the biggest risk and very few surgeons qualified to do it.

To me the vsg to rny leaves you with the worst of both, JMHO as stated.

I think you have a distorted perception. I have been on these boards for years, and a very, very small percentage have the difficulties that you described. On the other hand, I have seen loads of people make it to 100% goal. I had horrible reflux before Vsg, and my doc recommended Rny. That is a terrific surgery, but it wasn't for me. During surgery my doc found the hiatel hernia that was causing all of the reflux, and I have not had any issues with acid since. Does every person with Vsg make it to goal? No. But neither does every patient for Rny or lapband. IMHO the Vsg is a strong enough tool to get you to where you want to be with the least amount of risk/complications when compared to Rny or DS. The lapband IMHO has a ton of issues, with a high complication rate resulting in many posting here that they had to have it removed. If you researched and found a doctor who is in agreement that vsg is a good path for you, do not beat yourself up second guessing yourself.

thanks for the reply. I think my post may have been slightly misleading in that I am absolutely 120% on board with having my vsg. no second guessing here!!! I was just wondering what complications could occur directly after surgery that would cause the doctor to need to go back in and revise to RNY. I DO NOT want Rny myself :). I saw a few people on these boards say that they had vsg surgery and something went wrong and they had to go back in the next day for rny. and I was wondering why that is. But I don't remember user names of people that had that done. :)

RNY on 08/13/14

I'm one of those people, it was immediately after my VSG.  I haven't met one other person this happened to - so it's extremely rare.  I knew something wasn't right because I couldn't breathe when I woke from surgery.  I could not inhale without pain.  Turns out I had a kink in my sleeve - surgery report says "obstruction."  I definitely did NOT want the RNY (both of my parents had it and I didn't like the side effects).  Lucky for me, I don't have the side effects at all.  I think because I've been so strict in not wanting to dump, therefore I haven't.  I've never thrown up either.  I'm doing the best with what I've got.  The beginning was very hard for me, I was angry for not getting the surgery I had researched and wanted. I was in the hospital for 4 days, it took longer to heal...but now I look at the bright side - I got the benefit of the VSG surgery AND the RNY :)

That ks for sharing your story with me. I'm actually not post op as you suggested. I'm due to have vsg on October 17th. I was just wondering what sort of issues COULD occur that COULD force me into an rny postoperatively. I'm so glad you replied and soglad to hear you are doing well and not having bar side effects!
