Hi all! I am (for the first time) coaching my daughters cheerleading team this year. They are in 4th through 6th grades. We have a HUGE cheering competition on Oct. 26th. Its basically the season finally. Anyway, the two weeks prior to that we have practices 3 days per week.... 2 1/2 hours per practice. Guess when my surgery got scheduled for?? October 17th!!!! So I have surgery on Friday the 17th. should be home Saturday the 18th... and next practice just a few days later on Tuesday the 21st. ANd then several practices right in a row and the competition 9 days post op...

I don't need to be super physically active at practices. I am assistant coach so I have help there. DO you all think this will be okay? Like I know im not going to be feeling great but do you think I will physically be able to make it to competition and sit there for the 5 hours without huge issues????

Kinda freaking out here...

Honestly...you're going to be tired and sore.

i am now 9 days out & feel great but as far as exercise goes 30 minutes is all I can handle at this point. When I first came home all I wanted to do was sleep.

It might be a struggle....I hope you listen to your body & take care of yourself. You are more important!!

Im glad to hear how you are doing 9 days out. My co-coach obviously knows I will be there but sitting the whole time. I would be heartbroken if I missed it!!! But I didn't want to postpone this surgery either. THanks for the reply

It's going to be rough.  Honestly, I'd look for alternatives for the full week following surgery.  After that you could probably manage the travel, however, coaching might be a problem.  You absolutely should not be lifting for going crazy with movement for another week and no lifting for even longer.

I'd side with your health and look for alternatives.

What's more important, your health or cheerleading? Take care of yourself & listen to your body. Taking time out for you while you're healing is very important. Some have no issues early out & others do, you can't predict where you'll land. Take the time off, sitting for 5 hours is a long time, all the gas you'll have might not be out by the time competition rolls around & it can be painful, you'll want to walk around.

No one surgery is better than the other, what works for one may not work for another. T-Rebel

I have no experience with this particular situation from which to offer suggestions. However, I did face a similar dilemma for my own upcoming surgery. Surgeon's office offered next week. Problem is, I'm in the middle of the semester with school and while technically it would be possible, not sure I would have energy to keep up with work required. Taking off work requires balancing holiday needs and the very heavy post-holiday flu rampage that goes from Jan to mid-march. So, after looking at/balancing school and work needs I got very specific with my surgeon's office about when the best time would be--since it sounds like your dr's office is able to schedule fairly quickly, I'll bet if you looked at your own schedule you might find a better time that they could accommodate. That being said-our health is too important to keep putting off for everyone else.

For me, the first 3 or 4 days were totally lost - I felt like I had the flu- Headaches and drowsy - I slept all day for days.  By day 5 I had turned the corner and was in pretty good shape.   I was tired for weeks, but could function pretty well.  If your recovery is similar, you should be ok.

Best of luck,

Carol

Sorry but I don't think you will make it from my experience. .. I was in the hospital 3 days and out of work for 10 ... the first week was sooooooooo draining and after that was slow going... and I've given birth 4 times (no drugs) so I have a high tolerance to pain !! Everyone one is different but I'd say make arrangements! !! Best of luck to you!!! :-)

As others have said, everyone is different.  Some have an easier time handling surgery and others have more issues.  You won't know if you'll be able to handle any of this until you actually have surgery.  Unfortunately, none of us is able to predict how we will react to any part of the surgery and post-op diet.

My experience was a good one.  I had a lot of nausea and heaving after surgery but that was it.  I didn't take a single pain med after leaving the hospital.  I did sleep a little bit more for a week or so but I moved around pretty well.  I travelled 2 hours from home for a Bruce Springsteen concert 5 days post-op.  I stood and danced through pretty much the entire show.  I was pretty tired the next day but I had no problems at all.  I was sure that I had someone with me who knew what to watch for as far as my overdoing it or becoming dehydrated.  I kept a water bottle on me at all times and sipped water like crazy.  I packed all of my protein shakes and made sure to stay on my plan.  We stood waiting for the doors to open for about 45 minutes, the show started about two hours later, it lasted 3 hours, and we waited another 45 minutes for a cab back to the hotel.  So, is it possible??  Sure.  But you won't know until you see how you feel.  Play it by ear and be willing to skip practice for your health.
