Thought it would be interesting to compare cost and ins coverage.. My total surgery cost was $28,000 and with BCBS of Michigan my out of pocket cost is $800..

My wife and I had both had VSG surgery on the same day in Mexico. Surgery, airfare to California (from South Carolina), hotels, etc. cost us about $21,000 for the both us us.

Downside, insurance wouldn't pay a dime of it.

Upside, we're gonna live long enough to pay it off.

I have no idea how much overall the surgery was (I'm 6 weeks out and have yet to get the bill), but I got my gall bladder removed, a hiatal hernia repair, and the sleeve, and had to pay my $6000 out of pocket.

Insurance wouldn't cover anything...out of pocket $18,500!  Upside...insurance may cover the hiatal hernia they found!!  Prayers appreciated for that, please!

There was a $600 "Program Fee", $600 in-patient deductible, and $35 co-payment for each visit to the doctors, dietician, psych, sleep apnea doctor, etc. (probably around $200).  Lucky for me, my surgeon's office told me to go to the Patient Financial office, and I found out I was eligible for some type of supplemental insurance from the state that would cover all of those expenses.  Whew!  So I paid for gas and valet parking.

  I feel so thankful.

Haven't gone yet but so far I paid a $525 program fee and $10 copay each time I saw a Dr. I'm not expecting any other cost. Will let you know.

Great post, so interesting to see the differences between self pay, different states and different coverages.

I have BCBS of MI and I paid an initial $200 to the weight loss center before I starred my mandatory six month program.  I then paid $300 up front before surgery. I have yet to get my bill that insurance covered as I just had my surgery Oct 24!

My out of pocket will be $3500, $2500 will be billed to me and paid out over time.
