Day after surgery...yay!
I had my surgery yesterday morning at northwestern memorial in Chicago and I'm feeling good. First time On the computer because I've felt a little out of it. I didn't feel a lot of pain from the incisions, but has terrible neck and shoulder muscle pain from the gas that gets caught in the diaphragm. The doctors said that is how it manifests itself - feels like a pinched nerve and made moving in and out of bed difficult. They kept bringing me hot packs And it helped.
I'm also struggling with burping or any gas. Really nothing is happening except lots of empty burps that are really uncomfortable - I am keeping up my long walks so hopefully those will be better tomorrow!
The lip balm has been a life saver - something with the anesthesia gives you the worst dry mouth and it was hard to even talk or swallow. I was able to use the swabs to wet my teeth and tongue but it was frustrating.
Those were the worst parts of yesterday and everything is much better today. I am sore in the abdomen but only when I twist or move wrong. I'm really happy it's going this well. But I do think I'm hungry - maybe it's head hunger, but I'm really looking forward to broth :)
Walking as much as possible will help with the gas pain, so keep at it :D

I'm back home but really having a rough time getting any liquids in. I stared yesterday in the hospital doing so well with my water intake and then they had me swallow 7 different pills and all of this nausea built up. I thought it would get better as the day went on or today, but it hasn't and I'm having a really tough time.
the doctor said they wouldn't prescribe zophran out of the hospital but suggested dulcolax since a full bowel might be putting pressure on the stomach and causing the nausea. I just don't know but hate this feeling. I took the dulcolax, but no results yet and still can't get any of the water down.
Hate to be such a complainer!
Your surgeon won't prescribe you zofran for home use? That's BS. I'd get in touch with my PCP for a prescription.
Nausea can very well be a result of dehydration, so it's really important that you keep sipping. Some people have better luck with hot or warm drinks, like tea or broth, so try those out.

Thanks - been trying to stick with water at varying temps and with/without lemon and persistent sipping. Its feeling a little better today and while that dulcolax didn't seem to move anything substantial, it did seem to get the gas moving and I'm feeling a bit less bloated, so hoping today is much more comfortable and successful in fluid intake. Ugh - keep telling myself to look at this like after having kids - each day will get better and easier to manage, just need to power through these first rough ones...
