Question about post op diet

My wife is considering VSG. We know a couple of people that say they eat pretty much the same food as preop...just smaller amounts. Is this true? Comments please. Thanks.

Hi There! I will start with the disclaimer that every post op diet is different but there is a general consensus that what I put below is a god guideline.

So after surgery there is a progression of diet, it usually goes:

1-3 Weeks of Liquids (protein shakes, water, broth, sugar free jello, and sugar free popsicles)

2-3 weeks of soft/mushy foods (eggs, soft cheese, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, tofu products)

Then foods like poultry, ground meat, and raw veggies get added in, then finally red meat (it is the hardest to digest and sometimes takes months to tolerate)

After you are back to a full diet the emphasis is on protein and veggies. While you CAN eat the stuff you did before it will not help with weight loss and may make you feel ill.

The targets are:

70-90g of protein

30-50g of carbs (closer to 30 is better IMO)

20-30g of fat.

700-900 calories for losing.

1000-1200 calories for maintenance.

Portions should be 2-3oz of protein and 1oz of veggies, focusing on 3 meals a day, no snacks except protein shakes if you are not close to meeting your protein goal.

This information is based on the plan my surgeon gave me but I think you will find they are pretty similar. Check out the "what ya eating" posts for more details about what people are having.

Immediately post-op, there's a special diet progression to give your stomach time to heal and recover - so definitely not the same food.

After that, it is possible to eat the same food as pre-op but, let's face it, that's not really healthy right?  The Standard American Diet, even in smaller quantities, doesn't serve any of us well.  Most of those foods are also foods that won't stay in our stomachs very long or cause much sense of satisfaction so you will be able to eat more of them, even post-op.

Most people who achieve the greatest success with WLS are those who use it as a springboard for real lifestyle change and, yes, that does mean changing the ways in which we eat - not just the amounts we eat.

My post-op diet basically boils down to "prioritize protein, eat healthy fats, stay away from processed and refined carbs, drink lots of non-caloric liquids."  I also try to stick to three meals a day with no snacks, and I weigh my meals so that I don't eat more than 4 ounces at any meal.

no its not true.  while after goal weight is reached no food is completely off limits, food habits need to be different.  I eat almost no refined carbs and focus on protein and veggies.   so i very rarely eat mashed potatoes or bread or rice and certainly not daily in small amounts.  but the sleeve makes it perfectly comfortable to do this.  so it works.   diane
