Hi all,

Having my surgery in 28 days in Mexico .... I do have a food plan for right after surgery ... When to start puréed, etc.

i do have some questions though .....

What type of protein drinks should I look for?

What vitamins should I take after surgery?

Cacium, Iron, multi-vitamin?  Chewable, liquid?

What should I have on hand for gas pains?

My family doctor here in Canada is on board and willing to do my aftercare ....

Any help is greatly apprieciated!

Janet

1. Protein drinks you like, preferably whey protein isolate as the first ingredient.  Check out Nashua Nutrition to order sample packets.

2. I did Bariatric Advantage for the first 3 months post op.  The ASMBS recommends all chewable for the first 3-6 months.  You want a multi vitamin with 100% of most of the daily recommended vitamins and minerals - Flinstones does NOT cut it.  You also want 1500mg of Calcium CITRATE, not any other type of Calcium.  Other vitamins (iron, D3, and B12, for example) based on lab results.

3. Walking is the best solution for gas pains.  It's not stomach gas, it's internal due to the surgery.  Walking and heating pads work best.

1.  100% whey protein isolate - get some samples and try them first.  If you do a search on here for protein shakes you'll get a jillion ideas.

2.  This is usually dictated by your doctor but at the minimum you'll need a multivitamin/mineral formula, calicium citrate and possibly sublingual B12.

3.  The gas pains you'll have won't be helped with Gas-X or any of those things.  This gas will be from the gas they blow into your belly cavity to expand it for surgery.  The only way to get rid of that is to walk, walk, walk, walk.

Good luck!
