Vomiting after vitamins

I had the same problem. I now use a pill crusher to grind the vitamin (opurity bariatric MV) and mix it with 1-2 tbsp plain Greek yogurt. It goes down and stays down.

Hi,
The first couple of weeks I had a fair amount of nausea with everything. At my 2 week dietitian/surgeon follow up, I thought I would get into trouble for not starting my vitamins. However, the dietitian said it was ok and that it takes a while to develop vitamin deficiencies. She said I should hold off until at least 4 weeks so I didn't develop an association between vitamins and throwing up.
The surgeon said that some people end up with nausea post surgery (doesn't know the mechanism) but it will very gradually improve and then go away.
At 1 month, I started taking one daily and within a couple of days had an episode where it came right back up. Just remembering this makes me want to heave into a wastebasket. I stopped taking them for a few days. Now at 5.5 weeks, I am trying to get 1 in a day, should be 2 a day. I do a bit better if I break the chewable tabs into 3 to 4 pieces. Right now, I am looking at a 1/2 tablet wondering how it will go down.
If you are immediately nauseous right after swallowing, I doubt that taking it after real food would be helpful. It doesn't sound like it had time to cause stomach upset -- maybe it is more of a general nausea effect of the surgery. Also, maybe it would go down better if it wasn't just after a entire shake. "Take with food" can mean a fairly small amount of food.
I am using a Celebrate multi, it doesn't even have iron in it which is well associated with stomach upset. (I have too much ferritin so I am not supposed to take an iron supplement) Thinking back, I have never been one to take vitamins because even a simple multiple smelled icky to me. I hate to waste money but at some point I might have to try a different one to see it I can find one that I better tolerate.
Just my experience, at least you know you are not alone!

I had the same reaction. I tried with food and after protein shake and just couldn't stomach them. I did find that if I broke them in half and spaced them after meals I could keep them down (sometimes). I ended up going to the Costco gummy vitamins. I know this isn't ideal but I tolerate the gummys so much better. My blood work was perfect so it didn't hurt be any.
Now that I am 5 months out I will try them again soon after I finish the gummies. I hate to waste them but yuck! They were the worst part of post surgery.
There are days I still have a problem with getting nauseous after I take my vitamins and it doesn't matter which one it is. I've started taking them RIGHT before I eat a meal so they can mix in with food.
As I got further out I was able to take them with my protein shake and it seemed to be fine. But there are days I still get surprised by the nauseous feeling!
I recently switched back to a bariatric chewable so I could use it up before resuming my normal vitamin and noticed that it's causing my a ton of nausea. I tried lots of different combinations, and I've found that taking it at the end of a meal works best - a solid meal, not a semi-solid or liquid one.
