Developing diabetes AFTER surgery?!

I had my sleeve done oct 17, 2014. I was not diabetic and had no major co-morbibities. I've lost 60lbs since surgery, almost 100lbs total.

went to the doc today for uti symptoms and the doc comes back in and tells me my glycerin and ketone levels are elevated and they need to do bloodwork because those are diabetes symptoms.

Wtf? Anyone ever heard of someone becoming diabetic post op?

I haven't heard of it but I guess it could happen - especially if your body was already skewing that way before surgery.  I think there are other medical reasons for elevated ketone and glucose levels (you did mean glucose rather than glycerin, right?)

Hope it ends up not being Type 2 diabetes!

I don't know what a glycerin test is. But if you are doing really low carb, you SHOULD have elevated ketone levels. You should be in ketosis, fat burning mode. This is a good thing, and is not related to diabetes.

Did you have an A1C test?

If you really think there is an issue, see an endocrinologist.

Did you get a copy of your results?  There are lots of variables that could come into play. Did they do an A1c or just your blood glucose, were you fasting, etc.  I'm sure that's why they are doing additional tests. Try not to worry too much about it until you have the extra blood work and the results from that.

Your PCP may not realize the effects of surgery and the diet you are on. Ketones are normal low-carb.

Thanks for the replies everybody. Yes, I meant to say glucose and ketone levels ;)

It is possible, from the research I've done, that the elevated levels have something to do with the fact that I've lost so much, so fast, and my body is just out of whack.

its also, unfortunately, very possible that I am developing diabetes. I have a strong family history of it and I've put my body through a lot. If I find out that's what I have then I guess its just something i'm going to have to learn to live with. I've already taken positive steps towards making it more manageable by loosing this much weight.

I'll be sure to update everyone when I get my results.

If it is diabetes you are doing everything possible right now to put yourself in a position to control is completely without medication.  Many of us on here are Type II diabetics who control it completely with diet and exercise.  We aren't "cured", just in remission, but it feels great not to have to take the meds!
