Rectal Bleeding?? How worried should I be?

Im five days out and today I noticed some rectal bleeding. I wasn't too concerned at first.  I thought it was hemorrhoids. I had a bowel movement for the first time in 6 days and the bleeding stopped.  But it's started up again. Should I be worried? I have my post op with my surgeon tomorrow so I figured that I would be ok til then. I'm not really having other symptoms.

In my opinion, you need to call the on call doctor tonight. Rectal bleeding is never normal and at 5 days out you might have something serious going on. I would call right now.

Just spoke to the surgeon. He seems to think that I can wait until I see him tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Rectal bleeding typically comes in two colors: red or VERY dark, near black.

Red typically means rectal bleeding from hemorrhoids. Very dark, near black is digested blood from your upper gi and is worrisome.

Glad to hear you're following up with your provider tomorrow, but hopefully the above information gives you some clarity if it's an urgent issue or just a bothersome concern.

My surgeon told me that some blood might be passed in the first few days as they may not be able to get all the blood out after the surgery, apparently it can happen. However I would think by now it should be gone, and if you are still bleeding internally that probably isn't good. Definitely stay on top of it and see your surgeon asap.

I haven't had any problems since.  My surgeon has referred me to a gastroenterologist per protocol but he is not too concerned. Thank you all for your posts.
