FRUSTRATED!
Do any of you have the problem of people telling you to eat more constantly? I eat what I can, but it's not a lot (which was the point of the sleeve) and people are always lecturing me. Loved ones say I'm not eating enough. Strangers in the community guess that I'm eating too much (without even knowing me). It's just getting on my nerves at this point. I'm an adult and don't need the entire world having an opinion on what I eat. As long as the weight is still coming off I am happy. Down 52.2 lbs in 12 weeks so far. Does anyone else struggle with others opinions and "helpful" advice?
this is why i am struggling with whether to tell people widely. i hate unsolicited advice! i have had some of the few people i've told not so subtly staging an "intervention" of sorts (days post-surgery) where they bring up that i need to join weigh****chers or something, even though my own doctor says this IS a diet plan (high-protein) and that i don't need to.
I wish weigh****chers had a plan for WLS patients as their food counts are great. I guess I have been lucky as I have been pretty open about my surgery and haven't heard any such feed back. People are surprised at how little I eat but no one has suggested I eat more. If any one did say anything, I would just tell them I am working with my surgeon and nutritionist.
I think the main concern comes from the belief that losing so much weight so fast is dangerous.
Lately people are surprised when I tell them I plan to lose another 30-40 lbs but they just dont realize that I am still obese according to BMI. I have lost so much weight in the face, they don't seem to notice I still have quite a bit to lose in the abdomenal and chest area.

The family members that I eat with know that I've had this surgery, so they are understanding. I talk about what I need to do, how I need to eat, and they are OK with it.
I went through the holidays with these new restrictions - even went to Christmas parties and New Year's Eve! When I told my hostesses, etc., that I had bariatric surgery and couldn't taste certain things or drink alcohol, people were very supportive and encouraging. They didn't bug me.
With that said, I don't feel the need to tell everyone! But the people whom I eat with are mostly close to me, so they all know!
I hope your family can be more supportive and encouraging! This is hard enough without having a good team of people around you. But, also know that this is YOUR JOURNEY! You didn't complete all of those pre-reqs and go through surgery to NOT get results. It takes work, so turn off all of that negative white noise around you and just stay focused on your plan.
I will also add that some people can be jealous that you are in control when they feel out of control. Don't let them pull you into the chaos. You are in control of your own journey!
Good luck!
No one pays any attention to what I eat, but I do not invite personal opinions and am very good at having a forbidding countenance. Seriously, stop them in their tracks.
"Thanks for your concern. I follow a careful eating plan approved by my surgeon." or something similar. People will continue with that nonsense if you allow it.

It's only an issue if you let it be.....
Don't let anyone or anything get in your way, there are much more important things to think about and learn in this process !

The best way to deal with things like this is to acknowledge that the person has spoken, state your position, and redirect the conversation.
For example, "Thanks. I'm eating in a way that works best for me. Did you catch the latest episode of Dexter? Dexter's sister is INSANE!!"

I know it is hard but listen to the people in the know such as your surgeon, dietician or bariatric support group leader. I would kindly inform everyone else that you are following the meal plan set out by your doctor. They are probably just worried about your health but don't let their concerns sabotage. As long as you are healthy you are doing well.
The only person telling me to eat more was my husband because I would complain that I'm cold or tired. Are the ones telling you this, doing so because they mean well? Or is it sabotage? if they mean well, I would just be patient. If they're doing it to make you fail, I would put them in their place and make it a no discussion topic from now on.
