If you can do all of that.....

...then why can't you just do it without surgery?  What do you say to the naysayers who believe that if its possible for an overweight/obese person to have the discipline to drink liquids for 2-3 weeks, very little carbs and eat small meals, then why can't they do it without the surgery?

I'm pre-surgery and not on a super strict diet but even at 1700 calories a day, I'm only losing about a pound a week. That's not much when you have about 180 to lose and already have severe joint pain and sleep apnea. I could diet for the rest of my life and maybe never reach a good weight. This isn't about willpower for me - it's about the basic science of it.

Plus it's no one's business. You don't have to justify your decisions to anyone.

This comment makes me worried that you might have unrealistic expectations of how fast you'll lose weight with surgery!  There are weeks that you might "only" lose a pound a week post-op. And weeks that you might lose even less.  I hope that you won't feel discouraged during those times.

I've been researching WLS in general for years and the sleeve in particular since last summer. I follow folks on Instagram, read multiple WLS forums and have friends who have had the surgery. I've read books and listened to podcasts, talked to my doctor. My expectations are in line with reality. What's different between when I've dieted and now is that I have hope that something will help me lose weight and keep it off.

Great!  That's much more reassuring. :)

I have lost vast amounts of weight several times over, as in 100's of pounds. What I couldn't do is keep it off. The diminished sense of hunger and permanent restriction in capacity give me tools to KEEP the weight off.  I think having those tools has also given me the confidence that I'll be able to keep the weight off.

As for the liquid diet - could you do that indefinitely?  Because that's what it would take to keep the weight off. Ask anyone that's done Medifast or other liquid diet programs - as soon as you go off of the program you gain the weight back in most cases.  But ultimately no one else has any say in your decision. I, thankfully, haven't had any real naysayers. But I'd dare anyone to say anything to me about it now.

"Thanks, I've made the decision I feel is best for my health and well-being.  How about the latest episode of Game of Thrones?  Isn't Hodor dreamy?"

I.e., shut down the conversation and redirect.  Every single time.

LOL!  I don't actually watch the show (yet) but it was the first reference that came to my mind as an example.  Heh.
