surgery was Friday, got to come home yesterday! I am feeling some discomfort, but it's gas. I'm doing gas x strips as needed. I am worried that I am not drinking enough. How long did it take you to be able to meet the 64oz of fluids goal?

My surgery was the 17th and right now I am able to get in 2 protein drinks and enough water to hit about 45 total ounces of liquid. I fill a tiny plastic shot glass that a friend gave me and set my goal to drink one "shot" every half hour.  It's not easy and I know I need to drink more but my doctor is happy with my intake so far.  Good luck!

I had my surgery on a Tuesday and by Saturday I was getting 64 oz including the protein drink.  Literally keep liquid in you hand every waking moment....Actually use a cup :)  Good luck.

Hi

Congratulations on your surgery and being home again.

It took me weeks before I could get 64 ounces down in a day.  Right after surgery I had to work to get 40 ounces down a day.  At about a month out, I remember being at 48 ounces a day, and the doctor saying it was ok, but I should try to do better before the warm weather hit.

Just do the best you can, and if you think you are getting dehydrated, contact your surgeon.  My surgeon said they would give me an IV in the office to "tank me up" if needed, and that it was better to do so before having symptoms of dehydration.  But I did ok with my 40 -48 ounces per day.

best wishes,
Carol

It took me 6 weeks before I could drink the 64 oz. This was not a good thing. Nausea kept me from drinking much. Ended up in the ER twice for dehydration. I tell you this not to scare you but to caution you to keep trying to get in as much liquid as you can. If you're not hitting the 64 ounces by the next few days, call your surgeon ask for advice. You may need an anti-nausea med or some other treatment. Good luck!

Welcome to the loser's bench!

After 2-3 weeks I was getting the 64 oz. in.  There was a noticeable improvement in my ability to drink at 3-4 weeks out.

Hey OK2B, Just got home today after friday surgery. The hospital would not release me without certain medicine that no pharmacy had until today (this medicine was for pain). Which I have little of.

I am taking anti nausea medicine and that helps me keep drinking. Did not get 64 ounces in yesterday but I will get close to that today. Also liquid tylenol helps me. Keeps the cramps at bay. Towards the end of my six hours between tylenols I can really feel the cramps when I sip protein drink.  Cramps are mild but still not fun. Passing gas OK as of yesterday morning. Saturday night was tough.

Good luck getting fluids in.
